RE: most useful item
I use alot of plastic when I hike. Portioned foods in baggies, all together in a large baggie.

Can't help but think I use waaaaaay too much! So much for being environmentally friendly ;(

Some of my wife's tampons. The box says that with these babies you can go swimming, horseback riding, camping, running, fishing etc. And you know what? With those things in my pack and I can do all those things, so they must really work!

Errrr.... I think Buddur is right about the backpack... I've gone backpacking without a bandana and without zip locks, but never without a back pack.

But zip locks are probably one of the greatest technological developments to affect back packing. Its been years since I've backpacked without them.

How about a brain? I've seen people on the trail that didn't seem to have one and it was ugly.

But those who have one and remember to use it can do all sorts of neat things on a hike.

You can get a lifetimes worth of ziplocks at pacsmart.com Sorry guys, I had to get that in, I know more about ziplock bags than I care to, and sold about 10,000 of those babies today! I am lovin' ziplocks right now!

My most useful item is my pot grabber. Besides grabbing pots, I use it to pinch bears on the butt to keep 'em out of my 2nd most useful thing......my food.
