Help me with White Mountains trip this Friday “Getting a much later start to the hiking/camping season then what I had planned. Car problems and school (summer session at my college) made it rather difficult. Anyway, I took the next two Friday's off and plan on having some serious weekend fun. This coming weekend (7/20) I'm going up to the White Mountains with my wife and our 4-year old son. It will be his first time camping, so I'm quite excited. We'll be staying at one of those campsites off the Kangamangus highway. On Saturday or Sunday, I'd like to take them for a small, leisurely hike. A few miles at the most. I'm wondering if someone could recommend a good trailer to go to? I'd like to go on a trailer with some nice scenery, and maybe a few bridges too. Suggestions? Thanks!” 10:55:48 PM 7/16/01 RE: Help me with White Mountains trip this Friday “Don't forget the beer!” 1:40:59 AM 7/17/01 RE: Help me with White Mountains trip this Friday “Since you are camping off the Kancamagus, there are several short hikes that you and your family can do. Here are some suggestions: Sabbaday falls off the Kancamagus, Franconia falls off Lincoln woods trail, Mt Potash just east of Sabbaday falls are just a few. I will check my White Mountain guidebook tonight for some more.” 8:00:39 AM 7/17/01 RE: Help me with White Mountains trip this Friday “Any chance you could scan some pages from that book? I just ordered a White Mountains book, but it won't show up for another week at least. If possible, I'd like to get some specific directions on getting to the trailheads. I suppose I should buy a parking pass too.” 8:40:29 AM 7/17/01 RE: Help me with White Mountains trip this Friday 9:31:21 AM 7/17/01 RE: Help me with White Mountains trip this Friday 10:53:16 AM 7/17/01 RE: Help me with White Mountains trip this Friday “If you like waterfalls, here is a nice site that gives you a good list of falls near where you are camping. http://www.visitwhitemountains.com/htmldocs/falls.htm">click” 12:10:19 PM 7/17/01 RE: Help me with White Mountains trip this Friday “Dave - If you're staying on the Kanc, camp at the Jigger Johnson campground. That's by far is the nicest one off the Kanc, IMHO. The Potash trail is almost directly across the street. Awesome views of Franconia ridge from Potash. And yes, get a parking pass. Hope this helps! Yes, that is the one my friends and I used to stay at in High School. I've been trying to remember the name forever. Don't remember what is sto great about, but one of my friends (the expert camper/hiker amongst us) preferred that one over all the others. Can you tell me how far up Jigger Johnson is? I hate to pass it accidentally...” 1:33:15 PM 7/17/01 RE: Help me with White Mountains trip this Friday “Dave, iffn' you run across a group of 2 guys and 2 girls,( and, well maybe some of our kids) in a maroon Ford Ranger with a bunch of inner tubes heading up stream, that'll be us. We plan to take a real lazy inner tube ride several miles down the swift river, interspersed with a few crazy boulder splashes on Sunday. Come on over and ask for Troll and Uphill Klimber. We're kinda looking for a fun day and checking if the bugs have gone away yet. Did Sabbaday Falls a few weeks ago, real nice hike, nice scenery....but there was some littering going on at the falls. You may enjoy a more remote falls to visit a whole lot more, especially if there's no glass where you put your feet in the water. In any case, enjoy the Kanc!!” 2:59:09 PM 7/17/01 RE: Help me with White Mountains trip this Friday “Dave - Well, Jigger is closer to the Conway side than the Lincoln side. Coming from Lincoln, it's probably 20 or so miles up on the left, just before Bear Notch Road (don't quote me on the mileage). Here's a map of the area. The sites are rather large and some are relatively secluded (for cooler camping anyway). There are also showers for those who like to smell pretty when they camp too. A bunch of friends of mine head up there every Labor Day weekend. Tough to get a spot, but since there are no reservations, we get there early in the morning and inevitably someone will pack up and leave and we grab their spot. Have a great time!
