RE: SE Michigan/Highland Rec. Area
The maps I have say Proud Lake Recreation Area Hiking / Skiing Trials. The headquarters are located South of Powers Beach and Huron Picnic area on Wixom Rd. Are we talking the same area??

RE: SE Michigan/Highland Rec. Area
Sorry to cause confusion regarding the location of park hq. Actually Duck Lk Rd (as it heads south) ends and turns into Wixom Rd.

Does anyone need directions? I live only 15 minutes from here and am pretty familiar w/ Milfor/Wixom and surrounding areas.

I can even tell you where the closest DQ is!!! :)

Is it safe to assume that this is still on?

Sat Sept 8 at 10am?

If not, I guess I'll be hiking on my own!

RE: SE Michigan/Highland Rec. Area
Directions:

Take I-96 the Wixom Rd exit. I believe the exit number is 159.

Go north off the ramp (that's a rigth turn if your going west on 96). When that road ends, at Pontiac Trail, take a right and then an immediate left to stay on Wixom Rd.

That road will end as well and you'll want to turn left to stay on Wixom Rd. (again!)

The park headquarters is just a couple miles from there. Watch for the sign.

Hey, guys, thanks for bringing this thread back. Yes. This daytrip is still a go. I will get directions out today. Remember, this Saturday at the headquarters at Proud Lake Rec. Area.

BTW, how was Labor Day weekend? I checked out some trail in Pokagon SP (Indiana). It was a little busy, but what the hey, it's Indiana.

Labor day weekend was full of labor. We repaired the walls and wallpapered the bathroom. It was a drag but desperately needed repair. I rescheduled the reglazer guy, Joe, Abby and I will be there Saturday! YEAY!

I'm glad someone got some hiking in RL!

Son of a biscuit! This sounds like a cool little hike! Sept. is ate up with my vacation though. How far from you is this area Joy? South Michigan is just as close as South Ohio for me so I am interested in any other places to hike along with the Waterloo area.

Maybe an hour. We'll get maps and see what kind of a weekend trip we could make out of it when we're there on Saturday. Maybe a winter/late fall do?

I know that I said that I couldn't make it, but my Jordan River Pathway trip this weekend might fall apart. No one is giving me a "for sure". If I wind up not going, I would love to meet up with you guys (if you'll have me) instead. If it's cool, could someone email me some info in case my trip doesn't happen?

I'm willing to help out with the hiking club idea, so if I don't see ya, please keep me in mind for helping!

All dern day!

Reading a post on a different thread from Adventure Girl I got to thinking....

Howell Nature Center has this awesome high ropes course, 25-50 ft up in the trees. Hyper and I have been wanting to do it for awhile but can't seem to round up enough people who aren't afraid of heights. Anyone think they might wanna try it? You're hooked into harnesses and can't fall more than three feet or so. It's set up in a gorgeous pine forest. Might be fun. The low ropes corse was a blast!

RE: SE Michigan/Highland Rec. Area
YES... I remember you telling us about this while camping. Definitely interested. Sounds like fun!

Are you talking this year? Is it weekends? If you get enough people interested, email me and I'll let you know which dates I could do it. Depending on the dates I can probably get my best friend and my brother involved... and John, too, of course!!

We would need like 15 people for the course to cover the cost(over $200).

If you give me a date, I'll check w/ brother, friend and boyfriend. That's a possibilty of four right there! I have a few other hiking friends I could probably talk to if we need more people.

Come on Michiganders - speak up if your interested... Ohio folks, too.

Can someone tell me how long we'll be hiking tomorrow? Unfortunatly, I may end up working tomorrow (we ran across a HUGE problem on a job), and need to know a timeframe, if possible. Hopefully I can get enough done this afternoon to avoid long hours tomorrow.

As for the ropes course, I'm interested but I'd like to know more about it.

RE: SE Michigan/Highland Rec. Area
Yes - a dayhike. Yes - at 10am Sep 8. However - its at Proud Lake Rec, which is in Milford. Not too far from Highland Rec (maybe 5 - 10 minutes apart).

The easiest way...Take US 23 South to M-59 East. Turn right on Bogey Lake Rd (which is just past Highland Rec). Take Bogey to the end and turn right. This puts you on Commerce Rd. Then go couple miles and turn left on S Duck Lake Rd. Duck Lk ends at Sleeth and Wixom. (Its a funky intersection.) You want to be on Wixom Rd, headed South. (If I recall, you'll want to make a quick left on Sleeth and a quick right on Wixom). Then, it's less than a mile to the headquarters. Watch for the signs.

Map

Hope to see you there.

Didn't I read a new thread about hiking in October, either at Jordan River or Pt. Pelee? I'm interested in joining you again.

Hi Smiley Girl!

Well, what do people think? The second Saturday in October is Sept. 13. Hyperpacker mentioned the western end of the Waterloo-Pinckney trail. It would be about 12 miles round trip. I was out there yesterday - it is a great hike. Of course, we'd have to wear orange.

Point Pelee is great, but I'd rather not get stuck at the border for 5 hours. Let's let the world settle down a little.

I think we should meet at the Big Portage lake trailhead. We can then hike the 6 miles to Sackrider hill,do lunch then return. Some nice rolling hills, some swampy/boggy areas. The cover should be down, maybe some nice fall colors. Remember, wear some orange...hunting season will be in full swing. Anyone need directions?
