3 Sisters Hike - August 11-13

“I posted in another thread about a 3 Sisters hike for August 11-13.

So far we have Nomad & Meerkat in for the weekend, myself in for three days and Alpine & bc_trailguy listed as possibles.

We will be going into the 3 Sisters Wilderness in Central Oregon Saturday. The area is near Broken Top Mountain. The hike will invovle some cross country and undeveloped trail hiking as well as some miles on established trails. We will visit at least two lakes and a meadow with some of the best views of the "Sisters" in the entire wilderness area.

“That's awfully nice of you to ask and based on your previous TRs it is probably a trip that should not be missed. I'll be climbing Shasta that weekend though. What's the skeeter situation like up that way this time of year? They made a happy meal out of me on my last trip into Desolation a couple weeks ago.”

“I sure wish that I could go with you guys but thats a little far away for a weekender. Was out there in 1994 and it was beautiful.”

“Ah, thanks for the reminder Chuck. I need to remember to bring my camera. Wouldn't want to miss out on those photos!”

“Okay so far we have Nomad and Meerkat for the weekend, bc, alpine and myself for 3 days.

Alpine and I will be carpooling to the trailhead. bc what time do you think you'll get to Sisters? There are a few places there to eat. It's a touristy kind of place. Can't really recommend anything as I usually just blow by the place on the way to the woods.

As far as bugs go, I was up there two weeks ago and there were not many mosquitoes or flies to speak of. A couple buzzed around but all in all, pretty light.

Any more of you all thinking of jumping on board?”

“I haven't really checked my distances. Any idea what the drive time is, from say... Portland?

I should be able to get there by 3 or 4pm (earlier if necessary). Hwy 20 cuts right through town, doesn't it? Let's pick a joint right on the main drag, that's easy to find, like a Hotel pub or resturant.”

“It's about a 3 hour drive from Portland to Sisters. The best bet is to stay on I-5 south to Salem where you pick up Hwy 22 toward Detroit Recreation Areas/Bend. The main highway is the main drag through Sisters.

I think 4PM works great, we could plan to meet at the Ranger Station and find a place to eat from there. There are signs to the station, it's about a block or so off of Hwy 20.”

“Really! 3hrs from Portland. Plus, about 5 or so, from here. I guess I'll be getting a good start in the morning.

Sounds like we have a plan.”

“My partner at work was asking abut my August holiday. I told him, that to start off, I was going to do three sisters, in Oregon. I think that he may have gotten the wrong impression!”

“By the way, their names are Faith, Hope & Charity. But you best be careful because The Husband and The Wife reside in the vicinity as well. And I hear that ol' Bachelor can be quite the jealous type.”

“Maybe we should introduce them to The Three Brothers, up here in Manning PP. They're actually numbered 1 to 4, but the forth brother is separate, from the others. Apparently some bad blood, there.”

“BC, are you still looking at arriving Sisters around 4PM?

I've got Friday afternoon off so I can make it. I'm waiting to confirm with Alpine as we are carpooling.

Looks like Nomad and Meerkat will join us later in the evening.

“Sisters Ranger station - 4PM. I'll be there.

Night hike? After all that drivin', I'm sure I'll need to stretch my legs a bit. At the very least, a tip or two, of the elbow. :-)”

“Just finished packing. 1/2 day of work tomorrow and it's off to Sisters with Alpine ridin' shotgun.”

“I got home, to BC at about 9pm last night. Great weekend - Great weather - Great people - Great place - and Great photos (I hope).

I'm leaving again, tomorrow, for Cathedral PP, east of the North Cascades, but, I'll get some pics up for you, next week.

Looks like I'm in for another 'drive' today. A burning motorhome started a 700 acre fire, along the Hope Princeton Hwy near Manning PP. Could be hairy.”
