Happy 300 Detroit!
On this day in 1701, a Frenchman named Cadillac landed on a place called "The Straits" - Detroit.

So, throw a few candles on the hood of your Buick and dance a little techno for the toughest, roughest town in America. It could kick your city's ass!

Happy Birthday Detroit!

In light of "The French are Morons Thread", I must respectfully decline in participating in a celebration for a former French City.

RE: Happy 300 Detroit!
I feel uptight on a Saturday night
Nine o' clock, the radio's the only light
I hear my song and it pulls me through
Comes on strong, tells me what I got to do
I got to

Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down
Everybody's gonna leave their seat
You gotta lose your mind in Detroit Rock City

Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down
Everybody's gonna leave their seat

Getting late
I just can't wait
Ten o'clock and I know I gotta hit the road
First I drink, then I smoke
Start up the car, and I try to make the midnight show

Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down
Everybody's gonna leave their seat

Movin' fast, doin' 95
Hit top speed but I'm still movin' much too slow
I feel so good, I'm so alive
I hear my song playin' on the radio
It goes

Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get down
Everybody's gonna leave their seat

Twelve o'clock, I gotta rock
There's a truck ahead, lights starin' at my eyes
Oh my God, no time to turn
I got to laugh 'cause I know I'm gonna die
Why

Get up
Everybody's gonna move their feet
Get up
Everybody's gonna leave their seat

True story, though second hand. An acquaintence was in Amsterdam with a friend and they were hassled on the street one night by a couple of local toughs. When sneeringly asked where they were from, they truthfully replied, "Detroit." The punks backed up and then ran.

Detroit could kick my cities *ss?

I don't doubt it, the smell alone could knock a buzzard off a sh#t truck at fifty paces.

Cincinnati is such a German city it's amazing they don't goose step up the interstate and conquer Indianapolis. I guess they're still too busy fighting each other.

If your friends had said "Cincinati" the toughs would have probably just asked if they knew Venus Flytrap.

At least there's lots of good beer. Speaking of beer, I'll go drink one for Detroit. It's a local brew but it'll do...brb

Well, I gotta ch9ime in here... As a former Detroiter Suburbanite, there ARE things I miss, but I sure have some great memories...

Tiger Stadium
Cobo Hall
Joe Louis Arena
Detroit Zoo
Hart Plaza
Ethnic Festivals
Lafayette Coney Island
Renaissance Center
Woodward Avenue
Fireworks at the Riverfront
The Ambassador Bridge
Access to Windsor
The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel
Detroit Institute of Arts
T.G.I. Friday's
Hydroplane races off Belle Isle

And so much more...

But I don't miss the traffic, the cold, the snow and biting wind-chill factor, or the Downtown Monorail...

Wouldn't mind heading back for a visit...

Good point Sunshine.

Actually the worst smelling town on the planet is Nitro, West Virginia.

RE: Happy 300 Detroit!
humanpackmule; I used to drive thru Nitro on the turnpike all the time. Between the two ridges north and south of town there was NO speed limit. If anything we had to watch out for the state troopers passing us at 120 mph.

It's not near as bad now as ten years ago anyway.

RE: Happy 300 Detroit!
I grew up south of Detroit proper. We'd drive over the Rouge River bridge on the way to Tiger Stadium.

It was crazy. Smokestacks everywhere. Fires burned excess fuel at the tops of pipes. The Rouge River was essentially a drainage ditch with a smell like no other.

But, as I grew up, I learned a little history. The day after Pearl Harbor, Detroit stopped making cars. And that whole Rouge area probably created more planes and tanks than any other place on earth.

So, smell or freedom? Freedom, of course. The world needs places like Detroit so that people in pantywaist cities can turn on their lights and sip lattes in their Explorers.

Reino, my wife, is a big fan of Detroit. She says one of the prettiest sights she's ever seen was when a friend came into some money and took her on a helicopter flight from the top of the RenCen down the Detroit River and over Zug Island at sunset. She said the light coming through the purple smoke from the island's factories/chem plants sparkled. She's not kidding, either, LOL. She finds industrial landscapes as fascinating as the natural ones she grew up around in the U.P.
