Short trip .....long report “July 13th, we arrived at White Wolf in Yosemite National Park . We spent the night in a tent cabin with our family. On the morning of the 14th our family dropped us off at Tuolumne Meadows near the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge where the backpackers parking lot is. Across the street is J. M. T. trailhead and we say goodbye and hit the trail . Lyell Canyon is a beautiful canyon lush meadow grasses and the Lyell fork of the Tuolumne river meandering back and forth through the floor of the canyon. The first night we camped at an old footbridge that crosses the Lyell fork and met a man named Bob that was on a 4 day solo hike his pack weighed 55 Lbs. and was giving him some trouble. Gee? and I thought my pack was heavy at 43 Lbs. Caught and released a couple of brook trout that evening. 15th -As we near the head of Lyell Canyon and Donahue pass there are several beautiful tarns along the trail . My son Josh and I are having an excellent time although I am feeling the efffects of the altitude sickness , dizzy, nausea, loss of appetite, loss of energy and headaches?...fun stuff to have while hiking. We fianally arrived at the top of Donahue Pass (11,056 feet ) and sat at the top having a snack and taking in the view. We resumed our hike and headed down to rush creek... this is a very beautiful area we stopped here and pumped some more water getting ready to climb Island pass (10,203 feet ) . Island pass was my favorite area on this trip there are many, many tarns along the top of Island pass surrounded by alpine meadows ?.it?s just beautiful up there! We pressed on to Thousand Island Lake and camped there . Thousand Island is a beautiful deep blue lake and supposed to be a mecca for bears ?...I never even saw a foot print let alone a bear. We did a little fishing here and caught a couple of nice Rainbow Trout for dinner. Next day we headed for Red?s meadows and stopped by the Devil?s Postpile National Monument on our way to Red?s. We climbed to the top of the postpile before moving on , that is one strange pile of rocks. When we arrived at Red?s Meadow we found a campsite and got ready for those hot spring fed showers ! WOW... that water is Hot! ?.but it really felt good. We walked over to the café and ordered a couple of burgers ....man did they taste good! Went back to camp and later we made Jiffy Pop popocorn on the whisperlite and sat around the campfire until 11:00 pm or so. The next morning ...I still was having problems with altitude sickness even though we were much lower than the previous days. So we decided to bail and caught a shuttle bus to Mammoth . It was a much shorter trip than we had planned ...but we still had fun !” 2:57:51 PM 7/25/01 RE: Short trip .....long report “Some really nice pictures WW.... thanks for the report.” 3:43:41 PM 7/25/01 RE: Short trip .....long report “Thanks Wind Walker for the report and nice shots!! Great pictures WW!” 6:49:34 PM 7/25/01 RE: Short trip .....long report “Thanks for the report. Looking forward to this trip.” 7:00:56 PM 7/25/01 Thanx WW “Kewl Report. Kewl pics.” 7:03:14 PM 7/25/01
