Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “Was trying to think about a new thread that would not ENflame anyone, but would help y'all cool off. I thought maybe a thread about cool, crisp fall hikes. What are your favorite places to go and why? Any special gear or food you take out for cooler weather? Fall is my favorite time of year for being outdoors.” 8:02:15 AM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “i hike just about every weekend, so my pack just slowly morphes, grows, and shrinks with the seasons.” 8:08:14 AM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “My favorite hikes are in Oklahoma. Don't come around here looking for trails, wilderness, waterfalls, caves, or wildlife.” 8:22:50 AM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “Since I live in Florida when I need a mountain fix I go to Providence Canyon State Park in south west Georgia. It can be described as Georgia's little Grand Canyon. It's not the mountains by a long shot but it is pretty, has a couple of short climbs and can be easily done in a day making for a great weekender overnight trip.” 8:45:14 AM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “wally, jen and i went to providence canyon last year. we got some good pics. short trail, tho.” 8:50:02 AM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “I have three fav places so far: the SE portion of TN (savage gulf, grundy forest), and two places in East TN.. BSF and GSMNP.” 9:00:39 AM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “Bring on the Fall!” 9:26:10 AM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “So succinct! No long winded rambles this morn, no colors, textures, flavors, smells? COFFEE! Now that's a fall color, flavor, aroma. Go have some while standing in front of the open refrigerator with your eyes closed. Think mountains, coffee, sleet. Neat, huh.” 9:33:35 AM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “yuk! i need to get a bacpac-turban-thing and find me a desert to hike in.” 9:51:56 AM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “Rad, don't open your mail today, there's a notice about your being transferred to Syracuse in there.” 9:58:05 AM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Oh, and full facemask if you still want a nose afterwards. Frozen mud is great! Oh, sorry, that's January.” 12:37:58 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “i meant what state, not what house. geez!” 1:50:35 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “I'm in NJ. It stopped raining so I went to get the mail and YES! It was only about 65 degrees out. The last few days it was in the 90's and humid. Now it's raining again.” 1:58:08 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “JOWEE-ZEE????” 1:58:55 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “That isn't rain, it is urine from NYC.” 2:22:39 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “FALL!!! Now you're talking! That first cool front that breezes through in October, sometimes even late September if the gods are smiling on us (and sometimes not till November), releasing us from the hell of a deep south summer ... My plans are to HEAD NORTH and HIKE. So far on my burner -- September: Somewhere, anywhere north of here (E. Tennessee, Ark. Ozarks, Colorado?) as soon as it's cool enough up there. October: Red River Gorge ECT at the end of the month. And the whole goddam rest of the month, if I can do it. November or December: Olympic N.F. (Washington State). And at least 10 or 20 more trips before the heat and humidity returns.” 2:22:55 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “steve hiker -- stop by, lets go do a few miles together... East TN or RRG.. either one.” 3:00:14 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “I haven't even seen summer yet in WA. Today at about 12noon, it's 60 degrees. I'm not sure it's even gone over 80 degrees yet, and I love it. Lyndys, I used to live in NY. I would love the weather dropping to 65. It too damn humid there. I used to spend those 85-90 degree days in my bedroom where the airconditioner was.” 3:09:01 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “towndawg, i may meet you for an east tenn hike.” 3:11:28 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “My favorite part about the fall is that I can take a wider variety of food. Boiled eggs, hard cheese, you know all those things I like but spoil to fast in the heat of summer.” 3:28:57 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “Rad: When my friend and I hiked Providence last fall we did the trail twice in one day. 7 miles is nothing. Great photos though.” 3:34:10 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “I'm out every weekend too, almost all in the Sierras. Plan to backpack every weekend til we start the JMT end of Aug. 30 days on the trail, then backpack til snowboarding season starts.” 3:52:52 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “Summer's peak season, for me. It's sunny today, about 80f with a nice coastal breeze. I do like my fall (late Sept) in the B.C. Rockies, though. No bugs! and fewer people. The larch will be turning brilliant yellow, while the heather goes crimson and orange. And frost in the morning.” 4:48:35 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “Hey BC, do you track your progress on hikes in miles or Kilometers? The only reason I ask is you used F not C for the temp.” 4:57:46 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “Tennessee Savage Gulf RULES!!! Any of the Cumberland Trail Sections are great too.” 7:36:37 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “I like just about anywhere in the fall and with the cool weather we're having today I can't wait.” 8:52:36 PM 7/26/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “Hey Switchback- I converted to F, for the benefit of the 'TT' American majority. Normally, I use metric, wherever it works best. When measuring- there's nothing useful (nobody uses decimetre- 10cm)between a centimetre and a metre, so I use feet, for vertical. It's less vague. For horizontal, however, it's kilometres, as they are more defining than miles. I like to think of it as my own personal blend of 'Impetric'. I probably use metric more than most people, that I know, especially anyone over 40.” 12:46:14 AM 7/27/01 RE: Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes? “lol, BC! I understand what you mean.” 10:23:00 AM 7/27/01
