Hot! BORED! Talk about fav. fall hikes?

“Was trying to think about a new thread that would not ENflame anyone, but would help y'all cool off. I thought maybe a thread about cool, crisp fall hikes. What are your favorite places to go and why? Any special gear or food you take out for cooler weather? Fall is my favorite time of year for being outdoors.”

“i hike just about every weekend, so my pack just slowly morphes, grows, and shrinks with the seasons.”

“My favorite hikes are in Oklahoma. Don't come around here looking for trails, wilderness, waterfalls, caves, or wildlife.”

“Since I live in Florida when I need a mountain fix I go to Providence Canyon State Park in south west Georgia.

It can be described as Georgia's little Grand Canyon. It's not the mountains by a long shot but it is pretty, has a couple of short climbs and can be easily done in a day making for a great weekender overnight trip.”

“I have three fav places so far: the SE portion of TN (savage gulf, grundy forest), and two places in East TN.. BSF and GSMNP.”

Special gear: thick-treaded boots with abrasive surfaces for hiking on lake erie. Oh, and full facemask if you still want a nose afterwards.

“I'm in NJ. It stopped raining so I went to get the mail and YES! It was only about 65 degrees out. The last few days it was in the 90's and humid. Now it's raining again.”

That first cool front that breezes through in October, sometimes even late September if the gods are smiling on us (and sometimes not till November), releasing us from the hell of a deep south summer ...

My plans are to HEAD NORTH and HIKE. So far on my burner --

September: Somewhere, anywhere north of here (E. Tennessee, Ark. Ozarks, Colorado?) as soon as it's cool enough up there.

October: Red River Gorge ECT at the end of the month. And the whole goddam rest of the month, if I can do it.

November or December: Olympic N.F. (Washington State).

And at least 10 or 20 more trips before the heat and humidity returns.”

Lyndys, I used to live in NY. I would love the weather dropping to 65. It too damn humid there. I used to spend those 85-90 degree days in my bedroom where the airconditioner was.”

“My favorite part about the fall is that I can take a wider variety of food. Boiled eggs, hard cheese, you know all those things I like but spoil to fast in the heat of summer.”

“Rad: When my friend and I hiked Providence last fall we did the trail twice in one day. 7 miles is nothing. Great photos though.”

“I'm out every weekend too, almost all in the Sierras. Plan to backpack every weekend til we start the JMT end of Aug. 30 days on the trail, then backpack til snowboarding season starts.”

“Summer's peak season, for me. It's sunny today, about 80f with a nice coastal breeze.

I do like my fall (late Sept) in the B.C. Rockies, though. No bugs! and fewer people. The larch will be turning brilliant yellow, while the heather goes crimson and orange. And frost in the morning.”

“Hey Switchback- I converted to F, for the benefit of the 'TT' American majority.

Normally, I use metric, wherever it works best. When measuring- there's nothing useful (nobody uses decimetre- 10cm)between a centimetre and a metre, so I use feet, for vertical. It's less vague. For horizontal, however, it's kilometres, as they are more defining than miles.

I like to think of it as my own personal blend of 'Impetric'. I probably use metric more than most people, that I know, especially anyone over 40.”
