Garden tools and blades get the old file routine. Nothing makes for easy work than a sharp blade.

I liked all this clean fun. But I can't come up with different pun subject (although I didn't intend to with this one).

RE: Are you sharp enough?
Violin, I went to Campmor yesterday and used my NYNJ Conf card and got my 10% discount. The fellow by the water purifyers and survival stuff said he had Sawvivors to sell, but no blades. He didn't know where I could get blades. He then recommended the Sven and said he used one himself. However, it felt very heavy to me. Campmor online doesn't have a Sawvivor either. I would feel safer hiking with a saw (why I don't know, it must be subliminal). Any other ideas, a cheap stanley, or should I get the Gerber (are those blades hard to come by too?)

RE: Are you sharp enough?
Lyndy - take a look at the Corona 21 inch pro. It's the saw I hike with when I feel like hiking with a saw. It will handle about 95% of the blowdowns around where I hike.

HOI, where would I find one of these? I've never seen one listed online. Thanks for the suggestion.

RE: Are you sharp enough?
The blades are available for all online if you do a search.

My Gerber broke (in a friends hands) on maybe it's 4th time out. It did first saw enough wood to keep us warm for several days when the temps dipped below -10 F overnight, so I got my money's worth.

Most times you don't really need a saw as you can break smaller stuff and it is lower impact to use that (or gasp not have a fire). But... I do love a fire and can't really imagine winter hiking without one.

Oh. You do realize that the Sawvivor comes with a blade don't you? It hides inside the handle when broken down - no sharp edges in your pack.

RE: Are you sharp enough?
I don't plan on cutting down trees or branches unless we can't get safely through an area on our hike otherwise. I passed a lot of fire rings filled with blackened wood on my hike on Sunday, and they were right next to the creek and on the trail. Kinda dampened my enthusiasm for campfires. But if we got lost, I'd want to be prepared.

RE: Are you sharp enough?
The Sawvivor weighs a few ounces less but takes up twice as much room as the Sven...and does the same job.

Either one will do well.

RE: Are you sharp enough?
Lyndy - it sounds like the Corona might be a bit too much of a saw for your intended use but in anycase here are a couple online links:

Ben Meadows
Forestry Suppliers

When I hike with this saw I am actively looking for blowdowns to remove - this is a good saw for that purpose. The sheath for the saw fits nicely in a "ski slot" in my pack.

RE: Are you sharp enough?
Oh, for trail maintenance. That's very good of you, HOI. Maybe the Campmor guy didn't know where the blade hides in the Sawvivor. I'll do the online search.

RE: Are you sharp enough?
On the Black Forest Trail hike, Special K (Karl) had the sven saw. Did a great job cutting up fallen trees for firewood, and was pretty lightweight. The blade disappears inside the handle like some other saws. I was pretty impressed. He said that the blade was lasting through a lot of sawing.

If I ever meet a woman on the trail with a saw, I will give her a $20 bill.

You can take him, Steiny.

I originally started this thread because I wanted a saw for the trail. And they don't cost $50, so Steiny would pocket some money on that deal.

RE: Are you sharp enough?
bacpac....

You're going to have to owe me $50.

Up until last year, I carried one of those old Svea saws.

Last spring I went and bought one of those little "never need sharpening" folding saws out of Campmor.

When I want to make a fire, I ain't bouncing boulders off of sticks, OR jumping up and down on them only to get one rebound back up into my forehead.

Been there. Watched other people do that.

"Sigh" everyone wants to get in on this deal.

I would say that you are resourceful to get your son to backpack with you, be packmule, and do manual labor. Bonus points if he is good company, too.

Honey Lamb....

Where were you when I was wielding either of those saws?

I could use the bucks for the picture of me with a bow.

But you should have seen me last weekend with the 12/13 inch bar chain saw.

Whatta' you maybe pay for THAT?

Can it at last be a picture of naked person using a saw?

Has anyone ever used those emergency saws that look like a piece of cable with loop handles on either side?

Gear Slut -

Those saws are nearly worthless. You'd have more luck with a plastic picnic knife.

RE: Are you sharp enough?
LyndyS: there are two saws that I have or have seen that work well and are light. Mine is sold by Coghlin, or something like that. It has a pretty big blade, about24 inches long, which stows in the hollow tube of the back. A handle reverses for storing, and tensions the blade when its set up. It forms a triangle, with the blade being the longest side of the triangle, and it all folds together. Its light, and cuts like crazy, wood up to maybe 8 inches in diameter.

Another one I've seen is a piece of chain like the chain off a chain saw. It is coiled into a can like a snuff can. It has rings on the ends of the chain, which you can pull with your fingers, or put a stick through them and saw back and forth. You have to pull pretty hard, but it cuts like crazy, and is light.

A saw sure makes a fire more efficient, and that makes camping more fun.

Saws in a pack? For firewood?
Holy moley!

I've packed the one-man crosscut saw on my last two trips with The Friendly Ranger, but we were doing maintenance. We had a shovel and a Pulaski too. But we were working, not *just* bp'ing.

Mel -
try breaking logs in the crotch of a tree - or between two close trees. I works on a typical hardwood up to mebbe 3", and even bigger conifers.

Rocks work plenty well, tho - you just hafta stay out of the way of the flying "tag".

RE: Are you sharp enough?
Interesting approach there I-am-OM - you might want to consider a knife that I carry sometimes for brushing up a trail - a LTC Kukri - see link: LTC Kukri from Cold Steel . It's not something I generally carry however - just another tool for trail maintenance. IMO it is better than a machete for general usefulness / self protection.
