Researchers Say Drug Could Address Tanning, Sex Drive, Weight Concerns

OKLAHOMA CITY -- What if you could lose weight, tan and increase your sex drive all at once?

According to Eyewitness News 5's Jessica Schambach, there is a new drug that could do just that.

Scientists at the University of Arizona told Eyewitness News 5 that they have a potion that could solve both the beauty and bedroom needs of those who use it. The pill is nicknamed the "Barbie drug."

According to researchers, the "Barbie drug" is a synthetic hormone that may address a number of issues that currently require separate medications.

Skin cancer researchers stumbled on the drug’s surprising effects while conducting a separate study. They tested the hormone melanotan 2 on a group of men, hoping it would stimulate a natural tan without the sun.

According to "Gary," who is currently testing the drug, the effects of melanotan 2 go well beyond a skin tan. He said he believes the synthetic hormone is better than Viagra.

"It starts things going quicker, easier," Gary said.

According to researchers, the hormone triggers a reaction in the brain that offers immediate sexual benefits -- as well as weight loss.

A fitness dietician, Tavis Piattoly, said the drug may also decrease appetite.

"(It) may have effect on seratonin, which decreases appetite," Piatoly said. "You may see some weight come off."

However, some dieticians say exercise and diet can produce the same effects. Some physicians agree with that assertion and are skeptical about the Barbie drug.

One urologist said he finds it hard to believe that the drug could be so wide-ranging in its impact.

"Everybody's looking for the holy grail … this would be it," said Dr. Neil Baum. "It would be almost too good to be true -- it would be magical. I doubt there is one pill that can do all that."

Several companies are currently offering customized drugs based on melanotan 2. There is also a nasal spray in the works that promises to boost libido in both men and women.

Although some are skeptical about the effects of the drug, thousands of others are waiting anxiously for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to approve it for distribution.

Baum said time will tell whether the drug really lives up to its promise.

"If the Barbie drug proves to be the quick fix it promises to be, I would use it … not only prescribe it … if it did all of those things," he said.

The Barbie drug is still in its research stage. Its makers expect the drug to be on the market within the next two years.”
