Try this one out on your instructor:

Q: What's the difference between a mandolin and a mandola?

A: A mandola burns longer!

Good for you.

I don't care for country music in general, but I do like bluegrass. I think it is the combination of instruments...including the mandolin and 5-string banjo.

Trivia question: What famous comedian is pretty good with the mandolin?

I believe that Steve Martin plays the 4 string banjo.

The answer is Johnny Carson.

What's the best sound a mandolin makes?

The sound of it bouncing off the banjo when you throw it in the dumpster.

I knew I'd like this thread by the title of it. I dig bluegrass!

You go Ms.Evergreen. You're never too young to learn a musical instrument.

The sound of a mandolin is the music to my ears.

Flyguy, Harold and Maude is a goood flick. But the music is better! Man did you know that there is no soundtrack for the movie available. And there is at least one song on the movie that Cat never put on his albums....bummer.

BTW the longneck banjo player was Pete Seger(SP?)

I don't know if this is from the tune you're referring to, Buddha, but there's a Big Rock Candy Mountain in UTAH!! Did you know that?? If I had my Utah guide here I could tell you where the song was written for it, or it was named for the song. I'm thinking of a Burl Ives song...... but he's not bluegrass, is he?

I cant think of a place closer to heaven than to sit on top of a mountain letting my soul pour out thru music to the world below.

What got me interested in playing the mandolin was the young new group Nickle Creek. The whole CD gives me goose bumps.

And then when my dad came to visit me from Colorado I took him to a festival and we sat and listened to a Celtic band called Clandestine. Here goes the goose bumps again.

My dad was on his way to a Chet Atkins seminar. His dream was to shake Mr. Atkins talented hand. Too bad Chet passed away a few weeks prior to the seminar.

Im grinning now..be pickin soon.

Big rock Candy Mountain -Pete Seeger and later Burl Ives. The music site didn't even know when Seeger recorded that album but it had Micheal Row Your Boat Ashore if that gives you a clue.

Seems to me the song credits on the soundtrack state "Big Rock Candy Mountain" was done by Harry McCintock in 1928.

No Ski..he left the day before they started. We went to Christmas in July in West Jefferson..they had 4 stages going..wide variety.

I plan on going to the VA highland games to catch the band Clandestine..Maybe even take time to do some hiking around there.

RE: Pickin and a grinnin
Evergreen, do you have to play your mandolin over the bed. If you don't have to, you are way ahead of the game.

My first husband said I could learn to play on his "precious" violin, but worried I would drop it, so he wanted me to play it while leaning over the bed. I quit, the violin & the marriage, lol.

LOL..

Odd thing the husband asked me when I TOLD him about my desire to play the mandolin..He asked.." What are you going to do? Go backpacking or play the mandolin?"

I told him BOTH..I didnt know I was only allowed one hobby..sheesh

Everygreen - I was in Boone for a week a couple of weeks ago. We arrived the last day of the Highlander games. Do you ever go to Beech Mtn to their Sunday eveny bluegrass concert? My wife and I wanted to go, but forgot to bring anything but short sleeves. Night time at 5500' would've been a little nippy.
