Favorite AT Sections? “Just curious as to anyone's favorite hikes along the AT. Please be somewhat specific so I can find the same section for my future plans. :)” 9:58:34 AM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “hMmmm.. not much response on this one.. and this is TRAILtalk.. right?.. *checks to see if he is in the right place* oh well..” 11:49:28 AM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “the AT stinks. stay away from it. it's all bad trail.” 12:18:37 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “Dawg- You thought this was a hiking board? TRAIL is an acronym for Trolls Remain Anonymous Internet Lounge.” 12:37:53 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? 12:44:39 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “*smiling*... truthfully?.. this board is a much there are good folks on the other board.. yes.. but this board tends to be lighter.. more fun. :)” 1:00:43 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “Here is a real answer Mount Rodgers Area Virgina.” 2:11:18 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “Tye River to the Maupin Field Shelter and back via the Mau-Har Trail. Great climbs, awesome expansive views, beautiful Campbell's Creek along the Mau-Har. It is a great one or two nighter. Baume 66” 2:47:33 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “SGT Rock.. I have been reading about that place.. when are YOU headed back there again?” 2:51:41 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “I've only been to two sections of the AT. One was Mt. Rogers, which I didn't hike, I just visited the ponies. Other people I know have hiked it and really liked the area. The other section is in NJ near the Water Gap. Anyone like the South Mountain section of PA, or Western MD? North Carolina?” 4:33:51 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “You could try doing the Maryland section in a twenty four hour period... What about starting just north of Cheoah Bald and heading south, past Nantahala(?). The view of Fontana Lake and the Smokies is nice from the Wesser Bald Observation Tower. I'll also second SGT Rock, the AT thru Grayson Highlands(Mt. Rodgers area) is awsome. I'll definately go there again some day. While hiking the AT thru the Shenandoahs you can stop for restraunt food practicly three times a day and once for ice cream too. "Thru-hikers' Disney Land" as they call it. Bring lots of $$ and enjoy some European style hikin' ;o) While we're on the subject, I still want to do the Hundred Mile Wilderness section. Saving Katahdin for last of course.” 4:37:17 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “LyndyS; Thanks for reminding me. The entire North Carolina/ Tennessee section is probably the nicest 'region' of the AT on the southern half.” 4:41:17 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “I loved the part from Wesser N.C. down to Deep Gap (the N.C. Deep Gap). Lots of nice balds and good water. The Nantahalas are great, and they weren't as hard as I expected from some people's reports. And the places to resupply allow you to make it in 4-5 day sections doing 10-15 mile days. One reason I like Mt Rodgers (Greyson Highlands) a little better are the fact it crosses some really nice, big creeks that are good for a dip in. As for getting back there - I just did the southern end from Wesser to Springer. Getting back there may have to wait until 2005 - I'm going to Germany. Guess I'll have to find some good trails in Europe to tell ya'll about.” 6:57:11 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “YeeHaa! Mr. UPS man just brought me the South Mt, PA AT maps and the Massanutten Mt VA maps, as well as a few guidebooks. Planning time!” 7:30:05 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “To answer the ?...Dick's Creek Gap south to Amicalola Falls State Park. This could be 2 favorites depending on the total time spent. But, if one does this , you will know if this is the sport for you. The run from Jarrard Gap to Black Gap Shelter (w/ a stop @ Springer) is a very good experience and is very rewarding. If you BP it.... you can stand up and say you have been on the AT!” 7:50:31 PM 7/27/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “I like the approach trail from Amicolola Falls to Neel's Gap. Nantahala is beautiful too. Cheoah Bald was awesome.” 12:06:32 PM 7/28/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “Foom Woody's Gap to Walasi Yi Center..not only great views on top of Blood Mtn..but wonderful memories too. Grayson Highlands in VA is second fav. Loved the wild ponies there.” 10:09:09 PM 7/28/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “In Georgia I loved Long Creek Falls, Preaching Rock, Cowrock Mountain, Blood Mountain, Tray Mountain, and the store at Walasi-Yi. If your into shelters, you have to see the Plumorchard Gap Shelter - it's a monster.” 10:20:06 PM 7/28/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “Wanna see a big shelter check out Over Mountain shelter. 'Bout could sleep an army in there. Not too far from Hump Mountain Bald and Round Bald if I remember right. The Jim & Molly Denton shelter near Linden, VA(Manassas gap) is a cool shelter too. I've been to the Plumorchard shelter to and the design is a great version of the two story shelter. David Lesser Memorial Shelter, 'bout 9 miles south of Harpers Ferry, is cool. There's a porch swing that I remember as being very relaxing.” 11:53:45 PM 7/28/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “Blood Mtn Shelter is a Classic!” 11:57:51 PM 7/28/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “walkingcrow?.. i will be staying in the overmountain shelter.. in october.. 18/19/20” 12:03:51 AM 7/29/01 RE: Favorite AT Sections? “Just about anywhere in Maine.” 12:05:10 AM 7/29/01 “?” 5:09:18 PM 7/02/03 “White Mountains” 5:49:57 PM 7/02/03
