Tent or tarp?

“My Virga tarptent is well under 2 pounds. It's bug proof and I've never been wet in it (except when I pitched it in one of those horizontal rains); I used it in all conditions on most of my thruhike.”

“wanderer, you sound exactly like solitary hiker, with whom I had a long exchange about the worthiness of a tarptent to even keep off sunlight. LOL. He kept arguing that you can't use one in winter. I kept arguing that time of year didn't matter, the weather conditions did. Bottom line, the Six Moon and Tarptents are great if snow isn't an issue. If it isn't going to snow in January where you are hiking, then use it. If you are expecting a blizzard in the Sierras, use a winter tent.

I actually love my black diamond tent, but I can cut almost one lb with the tarpent. my plan right now is to use the tarpent for hikes where I need low lb is important.

I may decide to stick with low pack weight if I am comfortable enough.”

“Maybe it's from one of the muscles that attaches near or on your knee getting messed with during surgery? There're three that attach just below the knee that run in your inner thigh.
Hope it doesn't hurt too much and you're up and running again soon.”

“WK, bruising and swelling after surgery is normal - the bruising is likely small amounts of blood from blood vessels that got cut during the procedure coming to the surface where the body can remove it more easily. The swelling is likely normal inflamation and is actually part of how the body heals itself. Alternating ice and heat (20 minutes of each followed by 20 minutes of nothing) will help with both pain and swelling if your doc allows it.”
