Nippin' on the trail
I was wondering how many of you bring out "in camp refreshments" and if so: What do you bring, what do you bring it in and how much?

RE: Nippin' on the trail
Yes. Usually a flask of something like Hot Damn! or Avalanche or a fruity schnapps.

My dad brought a whole nalgene bottle of Bailey's on our trip to Pictured Rocks in June.

I can't recall ever carrying booze on a backpack trip, but canoe trips are another story. Tip: you can get a lot of liquor through Canadian border checks if it's packaged in fuel bottles. (Normally we'd have bought it in Canada, but there were certain constraints in the logistics of the trip.)

I like Irish Cream in my mornin' coffee. Takes away the chill, and magically reduces the weight of a pack.

RE: Nippin' on the trail
If it's cold, brandy.
Warm weather gets rum or vodka to mix in with Gatoraide.
Hot weather...some scotch, or maybe if I'm ambitious I'll sneak in a couple of brews.

That being said, I haven't had anything on the trail on my last two trips.

RE: Nippin' on the trail
I usually premix Khalua and Grand Marnier, into a small plastic bottle like you buy mineral water in. They stand up well enough for one trip and I haven't cracked one, yet. 500ml will keep me in Monte Cristo coffees, for several days.

A couple of ounces Crown Royal is also occasionally worth the weight ;-)

I would never go buy some overexpensive whiskey (Crown Royal)on the way to go do a five day backpacking trip in 18" of snow just to get a commermative (however u spell it) flask, just so I would have a way to haul in something to nip at tho. Naw, not me. no way.

As much as I like Tequila, I've never taken it backpacking. I did try once, but I accidently left it in the car and didn't realize until I was 20 miles in.

I have taken boubon lots of times. Good stuff with hot apple cider mix or cold creek water.

I have also been given 3 ice cold beers by a drunk redneck as a reward for helping to get his car unstuck while on the AT, but I didn't pack it in, so I guess that doesn't count either.

RE: Nippin' on the trail
Nippin is strictly for the end of they day, sitting around the fire time.

I've taken Grand Marinier and Butterscotch shnopps in the past.

I really want to try bc's mixture. Hey bc, is that equal parts? Have you tried the creme version of Grand Marnier? My backpacking buddy brought some on our first trip. It was good but I prefer the original. We floated it in the river in order to serve it chilled. mmmmmm....

RE: Nippin' on the trail
Sunshine- The recipe is about 2 to 1 Khalua. Which makes sense, because the GM is about twice the price.

Grand Marnier, on it's own, is best consumed, slightly warmed, and the bottle floats quite well, in a hottub, at Whistler. I prefer the original - I don't take cream, in my coffee

The smallest platy holds about 12-16 oz red wine. REI has little lexan containers that hold 2-4 oz amaretto or schnaps, just enough for the hot chocolate on cold nights.

Just hang your bear bag first!

Two of struggled for some time one cold December after a night of hot toddy's while the third expressed regrets at being unable to help. We had a good laugh the next morning when we saw our bag was maybe 5-6 feet above the ground. Either all the bears were asleep or they were of some miniature breed.

RE: Nippin' on the trail
Cognac (>=VSOP) and port wine. About a pint of each 'should' last two people 3-4 days. Mighty tasty all year round, while alternating with the chocolate of your choice in cooler weather. The port should be the regular old bulletproof variety -- vintage port won't put up with all that shakin'.

Tho' There Was That Time that we mixed that tequila and that lime kool-aid... YOWza!

Lately we've been bringing Everclear. More kick per ounce.
