Nippin' on the trailView MessagesNippin' on the trail “I was wondering how many of you bring out "in camp refreshments" and if so: What do you bring, what do you bring it in and how much?” 9:41:01 AM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “alcohol is evil. i never touch it!” 9:42:14 AM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Yes. Usually a flask of something like Hot Damn! or Avalanche or a fruity schnapps. My dad brought a whole nalgene bottle of Bailey's on our trip to Pictured Rocks in June.” 9:42:48 AM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “evil! evil! evil! i would never do anything like carry a whole 1.75 of rum on the trail! never!!” 9:47:56 AM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I can't recall ever carrying booze on a backpack trip, but canoe trips are another story. Tip: you can get a lot of liquor through Canadian border checks if it's packaged in fuel bottles. (Normally we'd have bought it in Canada, but there were certain constraints in the logistics of the trip.)” 10:13:26 AM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “G-13” 10:20:55 AM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I like Irish Cream in my mornin' coffee. Takes away the chill, and magically reduces the weight of a pack.” 10:25:40 AM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “If it's cold, brandy. Warm weather gets rum or vodka to mix in with Gatoraide. Hot weather...some scotch, or maybe if I'm ambitious I'll sneak in a couple of brews. That being said, I haven't had anything on the trail on my last two trips.” 11:17:18 AM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I usually premix Khalua and Grand Marnier, into a small plastic bottle like you buy mineral water in. They stand up well enough for one trip and I haven't cracked one, yet. 500ml will keep me in Monte Cristo coffees, for several days. A couple of ounces Crown Royal is also occasionally worth the weight ;-)” 11:47:09 AM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Typically a flask with Jim, Jack, or Johnny, (like Jim best) on a special occasion I'll bring some Jose gold” 11:54:14 AM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Boy, did I misread THAT thread title. I had something entirely different on my mind when I looked at it. *makes no comment, however*” 12:16:24 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I would never go buy some overexpensive whiskey (Crown Royal)on the way to go do a five day backpacking trip in 18" of snow just to get a commermative (however u spell it) flask, just so I would have a way to haul in something to nip at tho. Naw, not me. no way.” 12:39:23 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Glenn *hic*” 4:07:36 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “A pint of Yukon Jack is the honey for my tea at bedtime! At 110 proof it also makes a great disenfectant and fire starter in a pinch!” 5:59:07 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “What about shine? No hillbillies here?” 6:06:52 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I have NEVER ever blackmailed my Trail Talk friends into bringing a bottle of Beam to me on an ECT trip. Well almost never. OK! I did it! ...and I would have gotten away with it if it wurn't for you dang kids.” 6:30:36 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I never brought Walkincrow a bottle of Jim Bean on that ECT trip. Nope, Not even for that map. No way............ ............Oh wait.....I forgot........I did. Never mind.” 6:47:33 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I didn't even drink any of that non-Jim Beam stuff that Mr.walkindude didn't bring for Mr.walkincrow !” 6:55:02 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “That was Red River Gorge that that I "didn't" bring it to him.” 7:11:13 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “That was supposed to only be one that.” 7:14:11 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “That you that seem that to that be that only that digging that a that deeper that hole.” 7:16:33 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I don't feel so bad about that anymore after reading yours.” 7:46:18 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Glenfiddich in a Nalgene bottle. Not me.....never! Mooohoohaaha!” 7:56:02 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Stumblin'dude and Stumblin'crow, sounds like a good idea! Electric Tang 6 oz. vodka (stoli) 1 packet of Tang. Buddha tested and lesbian approved!” 9:11:34 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “As much as I like Tequila, I've never taken it backpacking. I did try once, but I accidently left it in the car and didn't realize until I was 20 miles in. I have taken boubon lots of times. Good stuff with hot apple cider mix or cold creek water. I have also been given 3 ice cold beers by a drunk redneck as a reward for helping to get his car unstuck while on the AT, but I didn't pack it in, so I guess that doesn't count either.” 9:23:25 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Actually I don't drink at all. I just was making a delivery.” 9:56:55 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Cold or hot, rain or snow, single malt scotch, usually Lagavulin or Macallan in a Nalgene bottle.” 10:10:32 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Brandy, straight up or vodka to be mixed with water and lemonaid mix. I carry the beverages in recycled one-litre Mountain Dew bottles.” 11:02:05 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “So that's how all those hikers walk off the edge of cliffs. . . . . ! ^^^” 11:05:33 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I like the pic. Wolfsister. LOL!” 11:06:40 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Nippin is strictly for the end of they day, sitting around the fire time. I've taken Grand Marinier and Butterscotch shnopps in the past. I really want to try bc's mixture. Hey bc, is that equal parts? Have you tried the creme version of Grand Marnier? My backpacking buddy brought some on our first trip. It was good but I prefer the original. We floated it in the river in order to serve it chilled. mmmmmm....” 11:09:44 PM 7/30/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Sunshine- The recipe is about 2 to 1 Khalua. Which makes sense, because the GM is about twice the price. Grand Marnier, on it's own, is best consumed, slightly warmed, and the bottle floats quite well, in a hottub, at Whistler. I prefer the original - I don't take cream, in my coffee” 1:03:02 AM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I carry abota bag with 2 bottles of Columbia Winery Reisling in it! Damn the weight I wanna have a glass of wine or 2 after a good day on the trail(of course is there ever a bad day on the trail)!” 2:56:39 AM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I never bring anything on the trail. I don't even drink and I surely didn't drink any of the Jim Beam that Walkincrow didn't have that Walkindude didn't bring for him.I didn't even drink a beer that GoJo didn't bring in on handtrucks.” 9:14:29 AM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “and i did not share a brew or ten that ski and i carried in!” 9:23:12 AM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Stoli & Tang??? I don't know. Thats kinda like leather seats in a Yugo.” 10:09:25 AM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “stoli and POONtang, maybe!” 10:26:14 AM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “The smallest platy holds about 12-16 oz red wine. REI has little lexan containers that hold 2-4 oz amaretto or schnaps, just enough for the hot chocolate on cold nights.” 10:28:05 AM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “capt morgan after a days hike is great for sipin. i carry it in a platy. fits nicely into my pack especially when it starts to dissapear. the platy then folds up smaller and smaller. i also carry cigars. the two together does make ye ole camp more pleasant.” 10:58:53 AM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Just hang your bear bag first! Two of struggled for some time one cold December after a night of hot toddy's while the third expressed regrets at being unable to help. We had a good laugh the next morning when we saw our bag was maybe 5-6 feet above the ground. Either all the bears were asleep or they were of some miniature breed.” 11:14:04 AM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “3 shots of Poontoli please! And, flyguy, at least the Yugo is lightweight!” 12:33:51 PM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “There's some cheap-ass whiskey I found at the liquor store that comes in a plastic pint bottle. I be trying dat on my next trip. When it's empty, I'm re-using it to carry some sippin' Scotch.” 12:49:01 PM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “i carry a 16 oz, "dedicated nalgene" for my libations.” 1:12:56 PM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Cognac (>=VSOP) and port wine. About a pint of each 'should' last two people 3-4 days. Mighty tasty all year round, while alternating with the chocolate of your choice in cooler weather. The port should be the regular old bulletproof variety -- vintage port won't put up with all that shakin'. Tho' There Was That Time that we mixed that tequila and that lime kool-aid... YOWza!” 1:44:03 PM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “ooooh!! i've done the tequila and lime gatorade thing!! yowza!!! is right!” 2:00:06 PM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Sunshine- try the Butterscotch schnapps warm. Oh, is it good! skiracer never ever brought a nalgene of glen with him nor did he... oh never mind;-)” 2:00:32 PM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “Violin, where were you at that the bears were still awake in December? Ours are denned up under a nice white blanket by then.” 3:02:55 PM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I'm sure they were hibernating but they will come out for a hot toddy.” 3:21:23 PM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “How social of them, LOL. Don't forget the Christmas cookies on a nice plate, dear. (Though I hear they are partial to finger sandwiches.)” 3:27:03 PM 7/31/01 RE: Nippin' on the trail “I once brought a 1.75 liter bottle and a 750 ml bottle of Bourbon. Aaannnnd a 750 ml bottle of 100 proof Vodka. The Vodka was shared. Lately we've been bringing Everclear. More kick per ounce.” 3:29:17 PM 7/31/01
