Mt Bierstadt
My newest endeavor:
http://hikechick.tripod.com/hikechickscolorado14ersite/id6.html

Torrey-dog climbed her first 14'er, Torreys Peak!

Sorry about the copy/paste thing. I haven't taken the time to learn the system yet.

RE: Mt Bierstadt
Nice pics.

mountainchick's link

To make a link that opens in it's own window (a nice touch), simply copy and paste this:

<a href="INSERT URL"target="_blank">INSERT LINK NAME</a>

In place of INSERT URL, put in the URL of the website (copy and paste from your browser's address bar).
Don't forget the http:// part or it will be assumed to be on the www.thebackpacker.com server.

In place of INSERT LINK NAME, choose a name for the link.

Thanks for posting. I remember seeing no response to your request for good camping spots. There are not enough people talking about Colorado on this site, so keep it up!

Me and Diane summited Bierstadt today - along with a whole bunch of other peeps.

We were at the trailhead about 6:30 am and it was CHILLY - about 36 degrees. The sun took forever to shine on us, since we wuz on the west side of the mountain, but it warmed up pretty nice once the sun came up. Not a bad hike at all, the trail is like a dam freeway due to the massive volume of traffic.

There were about 15 people on the summit when we arrived and we were hiking up with two other groups of two. On the way down we probably passed at least a hundred people who were on their way up - no doubt to me that several of them wouldn't make it - they weren't prepared at all (no water, shorts and tank tops, all that ya know)

Once we were down, some nasty clouds rolled in over the summit, but I couldn't tell if there was any rain or not - never saw any lightening, nor did I hear any thunder.

Good times - i'll get some pics up in a few.

What did you think of the willows? Everything I read made me glad I was hiking it in winter.

the willows are a non issue now. Theres a dam boardwalk that takes you through them.

That was the same when I went up Beirstadt, it was a freeway of people who didn't know what they were doing. By the time I got back down there was a storm going off, and plenty of people up there in jeans and t-shirts.

just little spots here and there, none on the trails. A few cornices remain, and the couliers are full.

I posted them on your other thread C!B! I meant to do Huron today, but I slept in a little late, so I ended up doing a different hike. Huron or La Plata on Wednesday maybe.

Hey Bison
We should redo Bierstadt and then take the Sawtooth and top out Evans (the hard way)

Did you see that thing? I looked over at that and wondered how the hell you're supposed to get over there? But hell, I'll give it a try.

Hmmmm.... Roach says it's not nearly as bad as it looks.

market's good in Denver Crash, come on out - you'll be glad ya did.

The sawtooth looks way scarrier than it really is, so they say - check it out over at summitpost.org. Its exposed but "only" class 2 and 3.

We could leave on a friday night and climb Bierstadt via the south ridge and camp somewhere on the way up too. Just to be 'different'. Wouldn't have the crowds till we got close to the summit.

That sounds like a good idea Roam, but I didn't really see anyplace to camp on the way up Bierstadt.

I say we do the Sawtooth and have someone waiting to pick us up on top of Evans :)

check out the south ridge approach shown over at summitpost. just before you head up to the NE on the south ridge, there's a confluence of creeks and trail junction, i think you could camp there.

i like the idea of a ride down from Evans - and I don't really want to cross the sawtooth with a full pack.

I'll take a look at it, but yeah not necessarily wanting to haul a full pack over the sawtooth is another reason to do it as a dayhike.

But then of course I'm planning to go over the Devil's Causeway this weekend with a full pack, which should be significantly more frightening.

I don't think so, the knife edge is just after K2, between it and Capitol.
