RE: Primus Yellowstone Lite
I just got a MSR Pocket Rocket and have had it out for about 4 trips now. I love it! It is now my primary summer stove.

Sorry but I don't have any experience with other canister stoves.

RE: Primus Yellowstone Lite
One of the best stoves I?ve ever had. Small, light, fuel efficient.
A couple of weeks ago in the Winds a 8oz. canister lasted me 5 days of hot drinks and FD food.

Highly recommended!

RE: Primus Yellowstone Lite
I don't have the Yellowstone Lite but I did buy the Primus Alpine Micro to use as a backup. I was so impressed with it that it became the one I use all the time now. I'm still on the first canister of fuel. If the Yellowstone is half as good as the Alpine Micro it should turn out to be a good investment. Right now I am really impressed with Primus stoves.

RE: Primus Yellowstone Lite
Great little stove; weighs next to nothing and fits in the cookset. Of course, you have to sleep with the canister in the foot of the bag if you want a hot breakfast on a chilly morning. Otherwise, great performance and great control.

RE: Primus Yellowstone Lite
I have the Yellowstone Lite, and LOVE it. Great little stove, and though I've only used a couple of times since I bought it, I've never had any problems. Simple and lightweight, which should translate to fewer problems down the trail.

I have that stove. You can describe it in three words.

Altough they do have a similar one made of Titanium on the market now. (drool)

I have an Alpine Micro..Love it..

Only problem I had was that I didnt have a heat sheild to use during winter time packing..took forever to heat up water barely warm enough to even considering dunking a tea bag in it..besides that its a great stove

RE: Primus Yellowstone Lite
so far so good with mine. im glad to hear that others vouch for it.

PS: i havent yet had to discard and empty gas canister. what is the proper way to dispose of these? can they be recycled? and what if there is some fuel remaining in the can? Are these silly questions?

RE: Primus Yellowstone Lite
Am the proud new owner of said stove. Available now at Campmor for 19.97. I went to EMS to buy fuel, and saw it there for 34.95. Fired it up on the balcony here. Seems to work fine and has lots of output. My usual stove is the ol' Svea 123R, but I was getting tired of schlepping all that weight in summer (22 oz. + fuel and bottle). I plan on throwing the empty cannisters into the recycling bin at my condo complex. Let somebody else decide what to do with it.

RE: Primus Yellowstone Lite
You don't have a program in your town to collect stuff that isn't recyclable or safe to put in the trash? Once a year they collect trash that you're not supposed to dispose of in the usual fashion. What do you think will happen to it when it becomes someone elses problem? Why don't ya just do a bit of research and see if there's a responsible way you can dispose of the spent cannisters?

RE: Primus Yellowstone Lite
Joy,

you're right about disposal of the cannisters. But I thought that if they're empty, they could just be crushed by the recycler like other metal. One cannister (I believe it is/was Coleman) came with crushing mechanism.

RE: Primus Yellowstone Lite
I've been having a large time with my Xtreme (12 oz). I don't miss priming the MSR AT ALL. How does the Yellowstone compare? (looks like I could save some weight)

The deal that comes with the Coleman is called a 'green key', basically a small can-opener... pre-pop-top. When a canister is completely empty, poke a hole in it then crush it. You MIGHT be able to get the same effect with a hammer and nail, but I'd recommend a bomb-diffusing get-up, .

Got me one on Friday
I picked up on of these stoves at REI on Friday, yet they only had one Primus fuel canister. I tried to get a definative answer from the all knowing clerk whether I could use an MSR canister or if I had to stick to using only Primus. The threads look to be the same and the gases differ in composition, but in a pinch was hoping to be able to use MSR.

Anyone have this stove and use MSR canister?

Sexy little stove at 3oz and has piezo lighting. Fires right up on first click.

I think the threads on those things are univeral. I've used other types on my Primus.

That's a great little stove, and inexpensive also. I've had mine for about 3 or 4 years now, and have always used Primus canisters but I have heard that the MSR ones are totally compatible.

Yup, looks like a nice stove. I use the MSR Pocket Rocket for a canister stove. Weighs 3 oz. (without the case), but no piezo. I have the MSR Jet Engine...errrr....I mean....Dragonfly for cold weather or when I know I'll go through more than one canister.

I have a MSR Pocket Rocket and used it this weekend with a Primus canister at 20-30 degrees. Worked with no problem. Someone else was using a MSR cannister and there stove would barely work. There stove sat outside all night, mine was hanging in a tree in my food bag. Both should have been the same temp. I did put mine in my jacket for a while.
No problem with the threads matching.
