The lightweight Car Campin Thread

“I'm thinking about buying a midsized half camper. My current Krazy Kamper XT-4001 is just too cumbersome backing into those small sites, and sometimes I get the wheels stuck in the mud. I'm looking for decent size with cable, internet, phone, water, gas and electric hookups. I'm willing to sacrifice the sattilite dish to save on weight. Does anybody have any suggestions?”

“Oh, also, how many fold up picninc tables do you usually bring, I am saving 2 lbs. by using titanium tables instead of aluminum.”

“Does anyone ever take a chainsaw/wood splitter combo with them on the campground? I've been stuck quite a few times when the local BP runs out of $5.00 bundles of wood, it really comes in handy!”

“Aluminum beer cans instead of bottles can really help cut down on weight; bring all your food stuffs (i.e. your marinating steaks in zip lock bags instead of tupperware, etc) in flammable materials so you can just chuck it all in the campfire instead of carrying it around until you find a garbage can (don't even start with recycling bins); two 30 round clips usually suffices instead of carrying your ammo in those steel army surplus boxes; sunday newspapers for firestarter rather than liquid starter. Oh man, the opportunies are endless. I wonder if GoLite could help with the camper? hmmmm...”

“Thanks rockbuck, I also try to remove the bones from the steak before marinadeing to cut down on some weight. We even left the punchbowl home last time and it created a world of room!”

“I find that those cheesy plastic string of lanterns are much lighter (and less fragile) than the old glass variety.”

“Try using that new inflatable furniture that just came out instead of hauling an old sofa to sit on under the awning.”

“You can compress the diameter of your rolled up sleeping bag by running over it with your car.”

“You CANNOT sacrifice the sattelite dish. How else would you spend your time besides sitting in front of the television in your camper.

Don't forget the built-in stereo w/ subwoofer too. You know how the other campers love to hear you jam your Motown music.”

“Although it takes up space, an accordian placed on your picnic table will keep the campsites on either side vacant.”

“By all means Buddah, take your golf cart with you. You will not shed that much weight by leaving it at home. Besides, no one should have to walk 30 ft. to get to the bath house. That's driving distance.”

“We only bring the golf cart if the campground roads are paved. When we rough it, and the roads are gravel or dirt, I usually pack up the ATV or my 79' Suzuki dirtbike.”

“Seriously though, 10 Bug Zappers is too many. You can keep everybody awake at night just as easily with 8 or 9. That would be a possible weight savings of anywhere from 5 to 10 lbs. depending on the mfr.”

“lol rabbit! My goal is to get my weight down to 1,500 lbs. including camper. I save gas that way!”

“Try drilling holes in the handle of your toothbrush. I did that and gained about 3 miles per gallon. Every little bit helps.”

“I replaced my awning with a ID silawning, saving myself about 90 pounds. I've also replaced all the steel wheels with aluminum, I couldn't afford the titanium models yet.

I cool idea to dave weight is to drink hard liquor instead of beer. When you consider the percentage of alcohol in Everclear to the amount in Budwiser you see that you need a lot less for the same effect.

Heavy weight car campers are often hostile to me. They can't belive that my ultralight car gear can be as good as their heavy stuff.”

Hubby has a friend that just bought a camper. He's having the best time finding pull ins with a pool, satellite tv AND a grocery store! AND if that's not heaven enough, some sites come with a miniature golf course.”

“Remove all the unneccesary parts of your car. Fenders, bumpers, all the glass, the paint, antenna, back seats, spare tire, headlights, roof, hood, and anything else you can think of.”
