Colorado Bear Attack
This off the AP web tonight. Anybody out here got any details?

SALIDA, Colo. (AP) A black bear clawed through a tent and bit a 17-year-old boy Thursday, prompting officials to close a Boy Scout camp. It was the second bear attack in nine days.
Paul Marusak, an Eagle Scout from Shawnee, Kan., was asleep when the bear ripped through the ties at the back of the tent.

"I was laying there when I felt something on top of me, and then a sharp pain in my back," Marusak said. "My sleeping bag was dripping with bear saliva."

Marusak and a tent-mate threw shoes and screamed until the bear left. He was treated for bite marks and bruises.

On July 24, Scout leader Vicki Myhnier, 44, was pulled from her tent by a bear that bit her hand and arm. Both victims were sleeping in the same location.

Police and wildlife officials decided to close the camp, about 160 miles southwest of Denver.

The attacks are the only two in the camp's 31-year history.

I wonder if they had food in the tent?

RE: Colorado Bear Attack
I'm pretty sure they didn't have any food in there. Would you believe this kid was in the same exact tent, sleeping in the same cot where the other gal was attacked last week. They said on the news tonight that no one wanted to sleep in that tent, but the victim and his buddy decided to since the tent they were originally in had a flap that wouldn't stay closed. Also, state wildlife officials had caught and killed a bear yesterday that they thought might be the culprit. Now they believe the one that attacked this AM is the same one from last week. Needless to say, they've closed that camp down for the time being. The victims buddy is credited with saving the day by throwing his shoes at the bear to chase him away.

Man, That's freaky. It's like that bear has it in for who's in that spot.
I hope they killed the right bear.

Wow! That had to have been awful! Aren't black bears normally pretty passive. I'm kind of wondering the same as walkindude. They must have had food in their tent to provoke that kind of behavior. What other kind of bears do we have out here? The grizzlys were all killed off, right?

The one constant about black bears is their unpredictability.

How about the guy on the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday? Talk about a Bad Day: shot in the head by some kid with a pellet rifle, Then taken into custody on five outstanding warrants. Some days it doesn't pay to get out of bed.

Good one, V! Marv Albert, that ol' back-biter, LOLOL

RE: Colorado Bear Attack
when black bears attach it is either because they feel threatened (unlikely in this situation) or they associate humans with food, either because they are habituated by feeding, because the human smells like food, or is seen as prey (small people).

Bacpac, if you're leaving spots where you sit, it might be time to see the proctologist.
