RE: Trail Dogs
Buddur, I think I like you

I don't get the comment about checking the Hot Babes w/ loose Moral thread though?

I am a hot babe, I don't know about the loose morals...they're not airtight, but definetly not loose

Biz, sorry. I didn't mean to insult you. One of my many faults is always looking for "double entendres" and pointing them out. Didn't mean to be sophomorish or mean-spirited.

What is Buddur talking about? Diamonds? He hates me cause I don't think dogs belong on the trail. Maybe if he would stop screwing the pooch and get out with some people he would understand.

Probably not.

So what if I screw my pooch! It's my life...and my pooch!

And who hates you? As soon as you realize that dog owners have every right to bring their dog along while hiking, we'll get along!

Now back to your diamonds.

I do agree that dog owners have some rights to bring their dog along. Those rights don't extend to forcing everyone else to participate in the dog experience.

RE: Trail Dogs
Had a trail dog encounter Friday afternoon while hiking back in the Blackjack Springs Wilderness.

With berry season continuing, and berry bear scat in a couple places on the trail, and hiking solo, I was being cautious. I was paused on the trail by one of the spring ponds when a trio of ducks launched, which was strange since I was still and quiet. Then I heard what sounded like a large deer cross the stream inlet, but couldn't see anything through the undergrowth. After a couple moments, I could hear something coming generally in my direction in the bushes and trees, then caught a glimpse of something on all fours, waist high and furry, crashing through the vegetation. Not wanting to wait any longer, I pulled out my whistle and gave it a blast. Out of the bushes charges a very large, reddish brown "golden" retriever, barking and snarling loudly. I couldn't see anyone with it and it advanced growling and barking, so I blew the whistle again, which made it pause, but not stop barking and snarling. Then it's owner came along the trail, a guy about 40 with binocs around his neck. "Gee, I never see anyone else back here," he said, never apologizing for his dog's behavior.

Once the dog had a chance to sniff me, it was a real sweetie. But anyone who says their pet would never threaten anyone, should have seen this "sweet" dog. I was pretty close to having to defend myself with my hiking stick, which I was glad I had. Of course, it was supposed to be on a leash, but this guy didn't even have one with him.

Happens all the time. If the beast had bitten you the owner would have been less apologetic.

RE: Trail Dogs
Yeah, so much for the peace and quiet of the backcountry. At least it wasn't a bear. Though the bruin would have run, most likely, rather than advance. Bears may be getting used to humans, but dogs are innured to us...they know they can get us to do most anything they want.

trial dogs
I have 3 large dogs, and i have been considering taking them on the trail.. I have been trainning them to be social and quiet.. It takes alot of work and i do agree that not all dogs belong on the trail. The oldest is Sheba she was adopted from the local shelter, She is lab and shephard she was severely abused by her owners, we have had her for 12 years now.. She is too agressive towards strangers so she stays home. My two year old: rescued from the local shelter: Baxter is the working dog of the family. He is a boxer and great dane mix.. very cute and large.. He is great on the trail. He works with us every day, he has been used to help recover people in auto accidents, or sniff someone out. The third and baby of the family is Tanook. he is a shilo shephard.. he will be 160 when fully grown. also a great dog for the trail and highly socilized. He is our working dog in trainning.. But i do agree that it is the owners responsibality to control the dogs or leave them at home. Its bad for the other hikers and bad for the dog. You must teach your dog to be social in any situation requardless if you are on the trail or not.

Anyone have a tripod trail dog? the reason I ask is I know someone with a tripod pup that they are looking to find a home for, and I was thinking about it---She is a blue heeler border collie mix and both parents are working farm dogs--the pup lost a leg in a farm accident and is 16 months old now.
