An impulse purchase I'd been planning for a while.
I finally did it.

A banjo was my instrument of choice when I was young...but I never got one. (of course, my brother got his guitar)

My buddy works at a music store (guitars, amps, drums, etc.) and they just got in some sweet "Made In The USA" Deering banjos. Been wanting a banjo all my life and have kept telling myself "I'll buy one someday!...that someday is today.

The banjo was $479.00, hardshell & padded case $129.00, beginners Banjo book $11.00, and finger picks thrown in. Did I say that my buddy worked there (hint hint...employee discount)...I got the whole package for $376.38.

My life is complete...for now!

A group of terrorists captured a busload of banjo players.

They threatened to release one every hour until their demands were met.

What do a banjo solo and an early ejaculation have in common?

You see it approaching, but you can't prevent it.

Oooh, I like this one:

Why is the banjo player a fiddle player's best friend?

Without him, the fiddle would be the most hated instrument on earth.

Hey... long time, no seaweed! I was thinking of posting something about the Perseids popping this Saturday night, but they're going to SUCK because of moonlight. There's only like an hour's window of opportunity between the radiant rising... then the %#$&! Moon after midnight, *G*.

More banjo trivia: Earl Scruggs supposedly wore his banjo strap over his shoulder instead of his back because some idiot manager made him and Lester wear "those dang cowboy hats" and he couldn't get the strap over the hat.

i'm fixin to start learnin me some banjo now. there's a fellow at work who has one that he never bothered learning. he said i could use it to see if i would stick with it before i went and bought one.

did you teach yourself? with a book, video? lessons? i know you said you were playin with some oldtimers and that was helping you, but how did you start?

Do It Dood!
I got'sk'me some books. If'n I were you, I'd get this "book and CD" for $19.95. Heck, just get the book and I'll bust a copy of the CD for ya. How'bout that?

My playing is coming along fine, if I do say so myself. I've finished that book, almost through another book, and have 4 other books I'm picking (no pun intended) stuff from. Been putting in 1-2hrs of practicing a night, and am taking a break from it as I type.

Thanks for asking!

i'd love to learn to play, but i don't have 1 to 2 hours a night.
it'd be more like 2-3 hours a week.
i think i've heard the banjo's way harder to learn than the guitar. am i right?
maybe if i got one i'd find more time to spend on it, i can't say for sure. right now my time gets burned up exercising and working for the most part. i've been struggling to find enough "doggie time" during the week. round bout thursday he starts gettin real wound up and i gotta let him run it out on saturday and then sunday wear him out and that usually lasts through the beginning of the week.
once it gets springtime and i can start running in the woods after work again that won't be a problem.
but, anyway, tell me a little about learning to pick, if you wouldn't mind.

If You Want It Bad Enough...You'll Learn
You don't have to spend 1-2hrs a day learning anything, I do it because at this period in my life I have very little responsibilities and I don't watch TV during prime time. Picking it 2-3hrs a week is fine, and it would be a welcome break from your daily routine, and if you truely enjoy it you will....um...truely enjoy it!

I kind'of could play the guitar, just open chords, not bar chords, scales, single note riffs, etc. I think if I had a better guitar background the banjo would be easier to learn, because although the chord positions on the neck are different, the chord finger positions are similar. It's the right hand that has the picks and where the "rolling" playing pattern comes into play. It's tough to get the rhythm, but it comes with practice.

Even if I didn't have the time to spend, it is something I've wanted to learn since I was a kid, so I enjoy it regardless of my skill level. And enjoying the activity is all that truely matters, no matter what the activity is.

FARM OUT MAN! i love banjo! i think it's prolly harder for a guitar player like to learn it cause my habits are firmly established. i've picjed them up and tinkered a lil with them and it fries my brain. lester flats was my hero! i saw roy clark in concert one time when i was a kid and that guy played 15 different instruments fluently during that show but the highlight was a long songe he did on the banjo. man, he was smokin! FOGGY MOUNTAIN BREAKDOWN!
