it's in the beat.....
i can get through "boil them cabbage down" clean as a whistle at 100 bpm. that includes a 2-4 slide on the first beat of the 1st and 3rd measure and a 2-3 slide on the first note, third measure. the right hand rolls have not been a problem. my left hand has been. it took me a couple of weeks to be able to fret a c or d7 cleanly and keep beat, even at 70 bpm. i have got it now though. this is a blast! i have been practicing minimum, one hour a day, some days up to 4+ hours in increments. running girl set me up with four 1/2 hour lessons for valentines day. i'm meeting with the instructor monday for my first lesson. i hope i haven't created too many bad habits that need to be corrected.

that should be 2-4 slide on first note, 1st and 3rd and 5th measure and 2-3 slide on first note 5th measure.

Practice Makes Perfect...It All Comes In Time
Just keep pickin' at it.

Practice these common chord changes...
G-C-D...repeat
C-F-G... "
D-G-A... "
E-A-B... "
A-D-E... "

And it's never too early to practice trying to keep *both* ring and pinky finger of your right hand on the head as you play.

And I can't stress enough how much I feel that "Teach Yourself..." book and CD I told you about is worthwhile and beneficial to have and learn from!!!!!!!!! (I'm not going to tell you again.)

So how did your first banjo lesson go, Mr.Baume66?

thanks for asking.....
it went good. my instructor was quite impressed with my right hand form and accuracy. my wrist is plenty high with a good rounded hand. i haven't had any problem keeping my ring and pinky fingers planted from the start and i have a good sense of even rhythm (or so he says). i need to practice on shaping my left hand and fretting all the strings at the same time instead of building the chord one string at a time as i need that string. i was aware of doing that but hadn't tried to correct it. 1/2 hour goes by quick. next lesson is thursday of next week. hopefully i'll have the chord shaping down by then. i have a book by geoff howhald that he likes to use. i am going to order that book you suggested from janet davis and use it for home practice along with the other. i really am having fun learning this thing. i can't wait till i can actually play some tunes at a speed that makes them recognizable.

it is getting easier!
i am working on finding my chords while watching the tab. i'm actually able to get most of them pretty good, even after a slide. still need to practice on that though. the right hand is getting to the point of not having to think about it. i can find the string i'm looking for without having to look at all. i can play boil them cabbage down, cripple creek, shady grove and worried mans blues at 160 bpm pretty cleanly. even with the slides, hammers and pull offs. i need to find some jams around here so i can start learning form others.

Get Some CDs And Try To Jam To The Music
I wouldn't doubt that if you look hard enough that you'll find a group of older folks that get together at least once a month and play music. Check local churches, granges, and follow up on word-of-mouth leads.

he is an acquired taste for most folks but i have loved his music since i first heard it.

trivia:

he wrote the second most recorded popular music song in history (most folks don't even know who he is let alone the fact he wrote this song). you could find it quite easily if you do any kind of search on him.

Funny you mention Stewart McDonald, MarkO, as that is one of the sites I bookmarked in my new "Make Yer Own" file.

I may be going through Janet Davis for most of the parts, but for custom design that McDonald site has alot of tools and some pretty sweet binding, purfling and inlay material. I don't plan on buying a kit...I'm going to custom build it part by part, and customize it with artwork unique to noone else but me.

My Work Of Art-Can Anybody Guess The Type Of Boot?
I've been working hard on making my next banjo and just finished the resonator. It still needs stained and finished, but that won't happen until I can do the neck at the same time. But here is the sanded and ready to be finished ebony inlay of a bootprint on the back of a curly maple banjo resonator.

Frankly, I know nobody is going to see this but here goes nothing...
