I love those lowland gorillas. They are one of my favorites.

my friend Anna got to go study the chimps in Africa with Jane Goodall, because her father is an archaeologist...cool! one of the chimps came down the path toward her, and Anna didn't know what it was going to do...it got a running start, grabbed her, and rolled down the hill with her! LOL :-)

Saw this exhitbit three weekends ago. I tell you . . .those gorillas seemed a heck of a lot more intelligent than some the folks on this side of the glass.

ONe was sitting up against the glass looking in. Holding eye contact with a gorilla from a distance of 6 inches does make yo wonder who is on display.

yeah, i can understand the fascination with other animals and wanting to look at everything in the world, but still! after Anna studied with her, she and i saw Jane Goodall speak. boy, she gave some really convincing arguments (not that i needed them) about why primates especially should not be kept in captivity, or be exploited otherwise...i had about flooded the place with tears by the time she was done!

like "Planet of the Apes" isn't a good enough reason all by itself!

Lyra --

I wasn't too clear above about my response to seeing the Congo exhibit at the Bronx Zoo (except for pondering who really should have been behind the plexiglass).

Let me be clear: THe gorilla's should be protected where they belong and 'preserved' THERE. NOT uprooted to the Bronx for our viewing pleasure. It was very sad to look into the eyes of the gorilla. Sorta felt like he knew the score. Looked like a condemned man.

Of course, I very well might be anthropomorphizing a little too much. He may well have been thinking "can this guy get me a banana?"

Violin,
I know the: "I want to be at one with the monkeys," comment was just for the press.
But tell us why you really went over the wall.

RE: My Day at the Zoo
A few years ago some kid jumped over the fence into a bear cage, on a dare from his friends. I think it was the same Bronx zoo. That time however, the intruder wasn't nearly as lucky, to put it mildly.
