It functions well, no zipper snags or any problems. It's kept simple, and funtional, I like that. Remember that thru hiking the AT to get away from society is a fools game. You better like yourself because you will be spending alot of time with yourself. Happy trails, and don't burn plastic in fire pits, cause some people eat off that! Oh, and DO NOT mess with rock climbers ropes unless you want to die. The latest incarnation of the Army sleeping bag is a Modular Sleep System. It features a Gortex shell, Poly something bag, and Poly something else liner, as well as a cool compression sack. Price: Three year enlistment. Beware- I like the gear so much I have got 15 years under my belt. LOL” 4:16:21 PM 8/15/01 RE: Why do modern “I have only begun to use modern things. I have never tried military items. I have always preferred to use things not made in modern ways. Much of what I have used I made myself. Not that I am trying to adopt some fancy ways I am grateful for the suggestins here.” 5:46:20 PM 8/15/01 RE: Why do modern “Ya Amish or something? (Sorry) Tell us about your style. Have you seen the Homemade Gear site?” 5:48:44 PM 8/15/01 RE: Why do modern “I tried to go to: http://cheaperthandirt.com while I was taking a break at work. I got a message that I was trying to enter an off limits site because it contained information on weapons and bombs. That means the internet police at work have received a flag and will be coming to take me away.” 2:38:18 AM 8/16/01 Favorite gear (I love my Softie!) “I have used a Merlin Softie for about 2 years now and love it. The supplier I bought it from never mentioned it already had a gore-tex (Pertex) liner, so I have been using a Gore-tex bivy sack with it. I have been dry, warm, and smiling in storms that downed 6 inch thick tree branches next to me. I have also used the military sleeping bags with my trusty poncho liner along the inside. I slept quite warm in the coldest camp of my life. A military poncho liner is the finest invention ever. Get one. I still use a USAF Survival knife I've had since I was a kid in Boy Scouts. Our Marine Ka-bars are great weapons, but I like a smaller length for a camp knife. The new Mini Ka-bar would probably be great (5 inch blade). I use a poncho for cover. Rain directly on a Gore-tex bivy is too dang loud. I wear combat-style boots made by Hi-Tech, which are MUCH more comfortable than the issue boots. I use Fox River wick-dry cushioned hiking socks. I like these socks so much I have six pair that I have been using for daily wear for 3 years now. Tough and comfortable socks. I traded out my mess gear for a non-stick aluminum pot. I have a Peak 1 stove, but recently built a Pepsi can Photon stove and look forward to using it next time out. In the future, I may consider using a "canteen stove" that stacks on a issue canteen for use with the Pepsi can stove, as recommended here. However,canteen-wise, I already use 1 Liter medical sterile saline water bottles. They are light, tough, and the square sides pack well. And I got them free. I carry a little collapsable saw by Gerber. $12 and it works fast. I use a issue green sleeping pad under my bedroll. I left it full length, though. I roll the end under just a bit to form a pillow The Homemade Gear site (backpacking.net/makegear.html) is one of my favorite sites. I would recommend adding it to your favorite sites. Hitthetrail.com is another of my favorite sites. Advice, gear, trail sites--- You'll find a lot here.” 6:10:27 PM 6/11/02 tarpy! “well ,well ,well, da rat is back . where you been ho'boy/waft/etc. ? is yo wurtless ass back fo gudt ? hey , maybe GB will show up next...” 10:55:34 PM 6/11/02 Warning on Surplus Sites “Don't go to army surplus sites while you are at work. You might get the big warning message that you are being bad and trying to access weapons and explosive sites.” 12:14:06 PM 6/12/02 “I have one of those air farce survival knives. Best damn knife I ever owned. It's on its third sheath. First one was issue, second was homemade, and the third one is issue with the sharpening stone. I've used it to chop weeds, dig privy holes in hard ground, shave wood, and who knows what else. I just honed it back to razor sharp condition again. They are made by Camillus, probably the best. Camillus also makes the kabars.” 12:39:54 PM 6/12/02
