Digital Camera
Tried to search this site for digital cameras... didn't come up with anything.
I'm sure the subject must have come up somewhere.

Anyway I am considering taking the plunge for a digital camera ....any suggestions for a nice light camera that doesn't cost too much and has lots of memory?

My Brother in-law has a Fugi fine pix 1400
they only run about $225.00 on the web.
But there are so many options ...I just don't know where to start.

RE: Digital Camera
That looks small and lightweight.

I have a Kodak Millenium Gold 2000. It was small enough I carried it with me at all times in my front pocket on the llama trip. It has a 2X zoom, which is OK, but not as good as some cameras that are available.

With a 32M memory card I can take 114 high resolutions pics.

For double the money you can get more features like better zpom, low light capability, etc. I guess it is a tradeoff between cost, weight, and features.

It should be on the CD that came with the camera. It won't be on the computer...(has to be installed separately)

hmm, I found it. I think the problem is I don't have the 5V adapter, so when I plug the camera into the USB port nothing happens. I'm going to try recharging the camera batteries, maybe they're dead.

Made the leap to a digital Nikon 885 and it far surpasses expectations. Less than 8 oz. and 90 minutes of rechargeable battery life. One compact flash card is equivalent to 4 rolls of film. And no more development costs. This with several batteries and memory cards in the field and it will be bliss.

Nikon 885

My Backyard

It'll accept filters and a telephoto lens. Bunch of other stuff too (microdrive, fisheye lens, larger battery pack).

I'm just curious how most people print their digital pictures. I know I can actually print them from my printer, but doesnt it use alot of ink? I have been having mine devolped in the kodak picture maker in wal-mart. It is .48 per picture and that price can add up, but the pictures always look so good and on good quality paper.

Cool Tekapo
I noticed the card was only 16mb You can get really large cards for that (128 mb or so )and the prices have come down quite a bit.

So how much $ does that baby go for?

i've been struggling with this delima myself... the battle between weight & price, like a game of pong in my little brain. this looks great though. i like the fact that you can add lenses to it. we have been putting our pictures on disc(walmart does it) for some time. but i love the idea of having 4 rolls of film on 1 little disk. how much was it again?

ps.....can i come live in your back yard?

pps.....do you have koi or other fish in that thang?

What's the point of buying a digital camera, if you're going to be spending $$ having someone else print the pics? Oh ya, naked pics...I forgot!

You can print them on a home inkjet printer. The newer printers are built around photo printing. Use photo paper. Available at almost any stationer or business supply store, as well as Walmart and other mass retailers.

I don't print my digital pics...unless there is something I really want an enlargement of. I drag family and friends over to the computer monitor and show them a 19" slide show. The finepix viewer that came with my camera is very user friendly.

The Nikon 885 costs about five hunerd bones. You can find a better deal at pricewatch.com though.

The camera uses 16, 32, 64, 128, or 256MB Compact Flash cards. I'll go with several 128MB cards, because each one of those represents four rolls of 24 exposure film (and that's with high resolution setting). The 128MB card costs $89. Given the expense, you have to figure on ROI.

You could also go for the Nikon Coolpix 5000 for $1100. That's a little more weight and it offers 5 megapixels of resolution. The 885 gets you just under 3.4MP and you have to look for the difference in landspape image quality. Much of the difference can be made up within, say, Photoshop.

The days of SLR use are not over, by any means. There are still some photo types you just can't get being at a mid-priced digital camera.

Making up the difference with Photoshop?
CCD resolution and size is the key here. If you have the same size CCD with the same resolution, vs. one with a higher resolution, the image captured at a smaller pixel size or resolution can be made to be larger with Photoshop, and it does an okay job, but don't forget that you can't make something out of nothing. If the information isn't captured, it can't be manufactured via software solutions. All you are doing is enlarging what information you do have, and re-sampling it. Doing this at all compromises sharpness, and doing it a great deal compromises image quality in a big way.

Important observations.

Technique has a lot to do with what you can get away with too.

Sometimes by using a photo segment selector, I can sharpen up what part of an image appears to have less resolution. From there you down-sample and sharpen some more. This may have the effect of reconstituting what part of the image you miss from inferior image quality. Doesn't always work though.

Even when using high speed film, I've been asked, "how do you get distant objects so clear?"

I'm as a child with this stuff, really.

I'm learning the ropes with Photoshop myself. I've been re-scanning ALL of my old pictures on my website and dressing them up as necessary. It is true, it is hard to make something from nothing as I tried on some of the old Kodak 110 pictures!

The guy I hiked Yosemite Falls with is our Graphics person at work, so he is teaching me a little about photography and Photoshop too! We are going on a 4-day backpacking trip June 7-10. Can't wait!

That works actually. The family won't appreciate them any less.

Where are you going? Is that your Matterhorn hike?

The Kodak 110 was used on the Chain Lakes trip, our first real backpacking trip.

Yeah, that's the Matterhorn Peak trip. Starting at Twin Lakes and conditions permiting, over Matterhorn Peak. I may be using one of his extra Cannon cameras because he has a variety of lenses for it.
