How do you eat crawdads?

“I took the kids camping ver the weekend. My son and his pal caught a dozen cradads and a few mussels in the creek and brought them home to eat.

I had no idea what to do with them so they just boiled them in a pot and then cracked them open and ate them. Cooked like that they tasted like absolutely nothing.

So, does anyone out there know how to fix crawdads or mussels?”

“Crawdads - Throw in some salt... They cook quick, don't overcook! Take out of the pot right away. Lemon brings out the flavor... yummmm.. Haven't had crawdads since... well.. been a loooong time.

Mussels? Fresh water? I have only cooked saltwater mussels. Throw in a pot with water and seaweed (or salt), steam until shells are just cracked open. Take out of pot right away. Don't forget the lemon!”

“Crawfish are cooked like you would boil shrimp. Use some cajun crab boil (I like Zatarain"s) in the water. Be careful it can get hot quick.

Most, if not all fresh water mussels are endangered and protected. I "know" you were talking about salt water mussels but I have never cooked them.”

“Crawdads, crayfish, craydad, whatever you call them. All I know is catch, boil, eat. At camp (I'm so full of camp stories...) we had a crayfish party during grovers (grovers are when campers get a choice of activities) where they cought the little critters, had races,wrestling matches, then boiled and ate them. I guess it was pretty successful. Unfortunately I was leading a grover at the same time, so I didn't get to taste the end product.”

They are crawdads, IMHO. I don't know what the hell a crayfish is, *smiles*.”

“I remember eating oysters and crayfish with some friends in Mobile a few years ago. All the southern waitstaff was laughing their asses off watching the northerners try 'em.

Oh, well, they can't top the muskrats that we eat around here.

“DO NOT call crawfish "crayfish." I don't care how Yankee you are, it sounds SOOOOO uneducated and foreign.

That said, you need to boil them in seasoning. Use Zatarain's crab boil, add salt and perhaps half a lemon, and that's it.

I like to eat them with seafood sauce, which is basically catsup mixed with hot sauce or a little horseradish.”
