Americorps/SCA “Have had a crew of SCA kids again this year, helping me with big projects on the trail I maintain. Last year I had a crew for two weeks. We opened up two miles of trail along the river, and they put in a log stairway on a long, steep bank, and some log steps on shorter banks (this is a 9-mile dayhike trail that gets a wide variety of hikers, so we have to put in a few more amenities than bpers are used to). This year's crew is bridging a 36' stretch of slope that is perpetually muddy and slippery, and helping me replace a coupla rotten puncheons. They've been in my area about 4 years, now. First thing they did was refurbish a coupla long-neglected CCC buildings in a state park for their headquarters, and then they went to work. They've done an incredible job in state parks and on trails like mine all over the state. All the crews I've met and worked with have been really well-trained and are hard workers, and a lot of fun to be with. And the stuff they build looks like it'll outlast the pyramids! Makes me wish the guvmint would do something really useful, like revive the CCC, or greatly expand Americorps. The stuff this country could accomplish would be amazing. You ever run into any of these kids, tip your hat to them.” 10:51:27 PM 8/14/01 RE: Americorps/CSA “Americorps kicks @ss on trail building!
