Some advice, Sarabelle “Hi Sarabelle, We got a new dog. He is only 9 weeks old but came with car camping experience (one week at Lake Moomaw). We are hoping to make him a trail dog. How soon should we start putting junk on his back so that he doesn't hate it when he is finally big enough to go with us? Right now he only weighs 9 pounds. We'll ask his doctor on Friday but wondered if you had any advice. Were you little when you got your pacpac? Ask your dad.” 10:46:17 PM 8/14/01 RE: Some advice, Sarabelle “P.S. I am proud of you for not being jealous of Jamie. I love wire manners and hope you have a new friend! Your dad is happy and that only means more loves and scratches.” 10:48:57 PM 8/14/01 RE: Some advice, Sarabelle “Aww, a new puppie. I love puppies. I would wait until he's almost full size for a pacpac so that you don't end up buying a new one every month as he grows. If he doesn't like it at first, just take him on walks with it on but unloaded so he gets used to it, then slowly add the weight. You can still take him on the trail before his pacpac. Be sure to have fun with him! BTW: what kind is he?” 10:52:53 PM 8/14/01 RE: Some advice, Sarabelle “Hi deathmarch99. His picture is on the thread called Trail Dogs. He is an English Springer Spaniel (mom) and we think his dad might have been a Dalmation.” 10:56:52 PM 8/14/01 RE: Some advice, Sarabelle “Untitled By: Cameron, age 6 The day eddy went to chachachawaow, Eddy was heading to his planet when his surfbuod fell right to a planet Eddy said 'what is that planets name?' Darle a "Aceptar". Some advice, Sarabelle “Stop speaking Japaneese.” 7:48:16 PM 8/15/01 RE: Some advice, Sarabelle “Well, nobody should be installing Windows 95, anyway.” 8:32:43 PM 8/15/01 RE: Some advice, Sarabelle “Ask your vet when you can start putting weight on your puppy's back. I would tend to wait until the dog was at least a year old to make sure you don't put too much strain on developing muscles and bones. Sorry to be so brief and on topic......” 1:49:10 PM 8/16/01 RE: Some advice, Sarabelle “PepperDog is correct in that you should wait probably about a year to put any type of load on a pups back. Like human infants, a dog's skeletal plates have not fused together when the dog is young. You could cause damage to your dogs structure if you load him/her too soon. Certainly you can begin to train the pup to accept wearing a pack, just like you have to train a pup to accept a collar and leash, just wait long enough for a pack to fit and don't put any weight in it. Just as an aside, and not knowing how much experience you have rearing a young pup, here are several outstanding books that you might find useful: Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. Purely Positive Training by Sheila Booth Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor Clicker Training for Obedience by Morgan Spector BTW, if your dog is part Dalmation, he will probably be an excellant trail dog since the breed was developed to run along side and under carriages for miles and miles. Good luck with you pup!” 10:31:47 AM 8/17/01 RE: Some advice, Sarabelle “BobK, Are you sure your name is not Cindy? She is Wally's trainer and her recommended reading list is the SAME as hers. We are having fun working with him--he has learned several things just in the last 4 days. Thanks for the input.” 1:51:10 PM 8/17/01 RE: Some advice, Sarabelle “RG, it is really great to hear you have found a good positive reinforcement style trainer. Many, many dogs are not so lucky. :-(” 4:11:50 PM 8/17/01 RE: Some advice, Sarabelle “Get a copy of " Taking your dog backpacking" By Alan and Joann Riley” 2:54:57 PM 8/18/01
