Okay, so me and the missus are car camping in a campground in GSMNP, and we are settling in for the evening when I get the bright idea to cut us a couple of sticks for roasting marshmellows or something over the fire. So I'm trimming a stick, my knife slips and slices open my palm at the base of my thumb. A really nasty long gapping wound that totally freaked out my wife. She almost killed us both driving down off the mountain in search of an emergency room. But we made it into town okay, they sewed me up, and I didn't have to do dishes for the rest of our trip!”

“On my right shin I have the perfect scar -- perfect in that it's a perfect circle about the size of the end of a tent line. Anybody remember "yard darts"? The scar is a result of an errant dart thrown by my (then) six year old son just as I uttered the words, "Now be careful with those things..." Got another one on my right forearm about 6 inches long. Cut it on a piese of glass at work. that on took 35 stitches total to close. 20 on the inside, 15 on the outside.

If your not going to have a cool scar, it wasn't worth getting hurt.”

“I have one on my forehead from my younger days as a deckhand on Mississippi River towboats. We were unlashing barges that are held together by steel wires and ratchets that are under tremendous pressure.

I decided to knock one of the metal pipes out of a ratchet instead of taking the time to loosen it properly, and the thing flew up and hit me sqare on the forehead. Good thing I was wearing a headlamp at the time (it was night), since it shielded the impact somewhat. Gives me nightmares to think what could have happened had it hit differently.”

I crashed on my mountain bike, endoed, and still have white marks on my right lower cheek (FACE cheek!) from scraping blacktop.

A few years back, the one time I didn't wear goggles playing racquetball, I made a huge backhand play and crashed the racquet into my face above my left eye. It left a small gash. (yeah, I am truly coordinated... LOL)

As a kid, I was up off the ground, leaning over a wooden fence to look at the watering trough filling up (chores on the farm), got too far forward, slipped and get a gash above my right eyebrow. (Amazing I even have a face, eh??)

Also as a kid, I stepped on a rusty nail. My right foot to this day has a brown spot where it went in and I presume they never quite dug all the rust out.

Plus, the everyday assorted cat scratches, black raspberry-picking scratches, etc.

OHHH... and the one from my surgery......errrrrrrrrr, never mind.

If you don't have scars, you aren't living. ;-)”

“Was sitting in a wooden chair in front of the fireplace, re-reading "Pickwick Papers". Had a back pocket full of strike anywhere matches. Slid down in the chair to get more comfortable and friction took over. Still have a silver dollar sized mark there. And this before Massachusetts banned them. I coulda sued somebody!”

Age 5 -- car accident (i shouldnt have been driving) 2 stitches corner left eye

Age 6 -- fall out of chair whack chin on table, 6 stitches

Age 8 -- baseball bat to forehead
12 stitches. Bonus points: connects to scar# 1

Age 11 broken arm --- no stitches

I was opened up at birth and have a scar that runs clear across my belly, as well as two accompany scars left from feeding tubes.

Non -stitched scars

knot on my upper left chest from being impaled on a tree branch while running for a frisbee. That was one cute nurse!! It was a shallow gouge, too tough to stitch.

“Two good ones from my summer carpentry job in college.

#1 Mid front thigh, about nine inches. I was working with a power saw, the blade guard got stuck and the blade decelerated in my thigh muscle.

#2 Middle finger, right hand. We were sliding a steel I beam along the ground. There was a splinter of steel and when I moved my hand to get another grip, the splinter went through my finger. Broke the splinter off the beam while still in my finger, went to the ER with my finger and splinter wrapped in a bandana.

Those are just two highlights.”

belly ring - I've had it for 3 years, but the waist strap (pack)irritates it, might have to get rid of it. Don't know if I can handle 30 days of pinching & oozing. It'll leave a pretty ugly scar.”

A couple years earlier, I knocked out a tooth playing tag (I NOW HATE TAG). Again, I rounded a corner and hit a friend in the forehead. I gave him 6 stitches in the forehead.

I've got a roadrash scar just above my pelvis on the left side from a high speed in-line skating dive.

I also have the obligatory, first pocket knife scar.

One I'm proud of from working at camp this summer was from playing Capture the Flag. A buddy and I were creepin through the woods, and upon sight we fled, crashing through the brush, trees, etc. I had 4 good scrapes and gashes on my shins. One will leave a decent scar.”

Hernia operation. Knocked me out of commission for 3 months.

The 8 broken bones and 3 more surgeries left no visible scars.

The most recent hernia I had repaired was just before my senior year of college .. inguinal hernia lower left side. My girlfriend noticed a bump in the early part of the summer. I had it diagnosed and scheduled surgery for the end of the summer. Worked at my landscaping job all summer long. Doc. told me to keep an eye on it. Said if it strangulated that I had an hour to get into surgey before parts of my intestine would die. Made it through fine. Girlfriend made me laugh two days after surgery . . .I punched her then passed out and fell down. Techinally no external stitches . . .they held my skin together with steri-strips.”

“Gosh--I have so many so I'll only tell the ones with drama. I have an inch long one in an eyebrow. We were hiking down West Fork Oak Creek and my feet slipped out from under me on some moss and I landed on my head. The bone cut it from the inside out.

I have a long one on the inside of my thigh from sitting on a pair of scissors when I was a kid. I have another big one from climbing a barbed wire fence in high school. I have one from fourth grade where a sewing needle got in my arm--cool x-rays on that one. I have one on my ankle where a box roller fell and got me while I was unloading the grocery truck. I ran a green toothpick through my foot. I stuffed my teeth through my lower lip one time. I was running full tilt in the woods and went over a 10 foot cliff. I was lucky and landed in a huge pile of leaves. I probably have another dozen plus I don't know how I got them.”

A sweetie on my inner thigh I got when I was four, cruising down a San Francisco hill in my Radio Flyer, took my hands off the handle to dig in a box of Cracker Jacks, it overturned onto a rock garden and opened my leg up good.
