AT hiking in Pa, Maryland, Virginia, Help! “Anyone have info on doing the AT in this area...From Duncannon to Front Royal....” 2:09:37 PM 8/15/01 RE: AT hiking in Pa, Maryland, Virginia, Help! “I have hiked all of the AT in MD and WV, most of PA and parts of VA. What do you want to know?” 2:24:28 PM 8/15/01 RE: AT hiking in Pa, Maryland, Virginia, Help! “Wow. I'm impressed Tarpie that you've hiked the entire WV section of the A.T! I haven't (yet) but aspire to do that states AT section this fall.” 2:50:35 PM 8/15/01 RE: AT hiking in Pa, Maryland, Virginia, Help! “Tarpie has hiked it all but like a good rock concert he can't remember a bit of it!” 6:40:55 PM 8/15/01 RE: AT hiking in Pa, Maryland, Virginia, Help! “Caldonia State Park PA to Front Royal VA made several trip with boy scouts so I had lots of time to look at the trail... so what do you need?” 8:42:28 PM 8/15/01 RE: AT hiking in Pa, Maryland, Virginia, Help! “Just like to know what the terrain is like? Conditions of shelters(best/worst)? Are there nice trail towns or short resupply stores close to the trail especially around Maryland? Is the trail very crowded in October? Highlights and Lowlights on this section? Looking forward to continue my hike south. Started in 1993 in Maine... Thanks for the help Marketman” 6:45:13 AM 8/16/01 RE: AT hiking in Pa, Maryland, Virginia, Help! “The PATC has recently put up two new shelter in MD one at Weverton Cliffs and the other near the old Hemlock hill shelter. Both are excellent however the water sources are not very close. Molly Denton shelter is not to be missed. The part to avoid is the "ROLLERCOASTER" which is from Snickers Gap to Rod Hollow Shelter it is so named because you no longer go on top of the mtn you go along side. The terrain in MD is rocky and can lead to worn out ankles if you are not careful. Dalgrin (sp) has hot showers and flush toilets till mid Oct. There are only a few really hard uphills but most of them have switchbacks. You go into a few small towns such as Pen Mar and Harpers Ferry and Front Royal that you can get almost anything you need. Bears Den Hostel sells supplies and has hot showers and clean beds. As for the trail being crowded only on the weekends.” 8:52:46 PM 8/16/01
