NOOOOO!
School actually starts next week! As of next week I will be a college student again. I actually managed to not be one for about 3 weeks, due to summer classes. It just doesnt seem fair. One more year and thats it though! But i dont want to go to school! I will be on TT less often because I actually have to study. I will have dumb posts all about homework. I wont be able to hike on weekends because I have to work on weekends. Backpacking season is officially over for me. It is not fair! Ok im done. I just had to complain for a minute.

How to Study

Kinda boring reading, but those (typically more mature students) who follow it say it works.

What are you working on?

One more year. A little hint, coffee is your friend, and don't stress the small stuff. I'm a year ahead of you. I graduated just in time to get laid off. F*CKING RECESSION!!!. DAMN, I liked that job too! Anybody looking to hire a mechanical engineer? You get a cabana boy thrown in for free...

Steve, What major were you in!?!

One more year of school and then your done?? I used to think that.

You'll always have some school to go to, A-girl. Better get used to it.

What was it they sang at the end of "Life of Bryan"?

"Always look on the good side of life" (happy whistling...)

Tea's grammar never bothered me until I read his poem.
It was a good poem, ruined by careless error.

Damn that could have been a good poem.

College was really fun, but so is grownup life. I never had a dime when I was in college. Now I have more than a few, lol!

RE: NOOOOO!
A-Girl, it's back to college next week for me, too, but on the other side of the desk. I've managed to fritter away a whole summer, with a few hikes and other brief trips scattered through, and I'm not ready to be back in the classroom trying to get a bunch of students hyped up about learning to write better. So I guess I better get myself motivated if I hope to do the same for them, LOL. The in-service guest speaker next Friday better be pretty darn good.

BTW, when I went back to grad school after 15 years in the work world, it was da bomb!

Free advice (so you know what it is worth!)
I have attended college in my teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, & 50s. Enjoyed over 90% of it (comps suck). My belief is that if you are in school and not having fun, then you are doing something wrong. Examples of things people do wrong:

1. (This is No. 1 and accounts for over 90% of the reasons I have seen students fail in college). Trying to do too much at once (e.g., work + school + family all at once). Solution: Cut back on work or school, but NOT family. Your work hours + (4 times contact hours) should be less than or equal to 60. Need to stay in balance to win in the long haul. Don't try to "blitz" school thinking you can get it over with quickly. That is the sure road to failure.

2. Not prepared. Solution: It may add a little up front, but could shorten the long haul if you take some preparatory courses such as math, science, communications, statistics, etc. When you feel as prepared as the majority of the students in the class, you will be less stressed out.

3. Poor study habits. Solution: Learn what the three phases of studying are and work on beefing up all three. Know the three different ways to take notes and maximize their usage.

4. No support system: Solution: Cultivate a study group. Sometimes degree programs run in "cohorts" or "cadres" where you can stay with the same group throughout. Don't go it alone. Find out a source for old tests and quizzes so you can practice with them like everyone else does.

5. Getting in academic trouble you cannot get out of. Solution: READ THE CATALOG. Know the school's policies on grading, probation, disqualification, academic integrity, and maintaining continuous enrollment.

6. Dealing with difficult faculty. Solution: Ask around and avoid problematic professors if possible. Don't avoid a teacher just because they are hard or demanding. There is a difference. Drop classes early if you sense a problem. Visit faculty DURING OFFICE HOURS with questions from lecture or reading. Make frequent visits.

7. Bored and Unmotivated. Solution: "Get into" your courses. Find out why others are excited and you are not. Don't just stand back like you are watching goldfish. Join student organizations. Go to conferences and workshops, etc. THEN, if you are still not happy, then change majors or quit until you know what you want to do.

8. Financial trouble. Solution: Cultivate your resources the best you can BEFORE you commit to school. Never start a semester you cannot finish financially. Running out of money is not a legitimate reason for withdrawal during the semester at most colleges. Try to finish you last year of college as a full time student if you can. It will save you time and money in the long run. If you don't have an employer who is willing to make concessions so you can go to school, then you will have problems later for sure.

As a college student for 13 years of my life, faculty member for 19 years, and department chair for over 7 years of that, I have advised hundreds of students been through a lot myself. I hope this helps someone.
