An interplanetary shock wave hit Earth's magnetosphere on August 17 at
approximately 10:30 UT (3:30 a.m. PDT) and triggered an ongoing
geomagnetic storm. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras
Friday night and Saturday morning. Visit SpaceWeather.com for details.

Cool Mr Mark--we have clear skies tonight for a change. My son will be up from Phoenix this evening so we will watch together. Do you think we might see it as far south as we are?

RE: Aurorae
Well shoot! Things appeared to have died down (and it wasn't one of those monsters we had earlier in the year anyway, *grrrrrrrrrrr*).

Here's a nifty link, *G*.

What the heck! There's no Moon, so you might see a few late Perseid meteors...

RE: Aurorae
I ended up in Flagstaff tonight so we could not see much sky between the pine trees and the mountain. You need to come out here and hike so you can tell me what I am looking at up there.

RE: Aurorae
Well, Mary, you can be sure I'm not going to wait seven years between trips to the Canyon like I did last time, LOL!

In the meantime, you might want to pick up a copy of either Astronomy or Sky & Telescope magazine.

Also... be on the lookout for the next big meteor shower. The Leonids peak around November 17th, and there just *might* be a 'storm'. There will be a nifty crescent Moon (2 days past New) and it's a on a weekend!!

Not only that... you folks out West are supposed to get a better look at them.

RE: Aurorae
Tilt, did ya see that documentary debunking that we (humans) ever actually landed on the moon?

My boss (paranoid SOB) has been going on & on about it lately. I didn't see it but it sounds interesting..did we ever land on the moon?

cool place to hike!

A friend of ours went and worked on an Indian reservation in Oklahoma to skip out on the Nam war. There were many folks there on the reservation that did not believe we were on the moon. i wonder how common that was.

Wellnow, the Great Conspiracy, LOL. It would be funny if only people didn't fall for it.

Try this link. It completely refutes every argument made in that show. Ol' Rupert... what a clown.

MAJOR SOLAR FLARE: The most powerful solar flare since April erupted on the Sun today. The X5-class explosion hurled a bright coronal mass ejection into space and triggered a strong radio blackout on the sunlit side of Earth. Visit spaceweather.com for more information, images and updates.

Yaz... I think those were taken with the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) aboard the SOHO spacecraft (the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory).

There ought to be some Northern Lights tonight for the folks who are far enough north. Too bad there's so much moonlight, *grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr*
