Dirty Socks
After yet another fine weekend on the trail, I come home on Sunday and my says to me "I think it is great that you can get out and see nature, but what is up with your socks? They are dirtier than you are!!"
How can I keep my socks clean? Also does anybody have a suggestion as to what I should use when crossing creeks? I had some very wet hiking boots after going through Whites creek-twice!!
Keep in mind, eventhough I had wet boots and dirty socks I still had a heck of a great weekend. Hiked the Jones/Whites creek Loop.

RE: Dirty Socks
If your hiking boots are getting wet... then you dont have them sealed properly..

Also.. I carry a pair of wet sandals for creek crossings if the water is really deep.

Also.. clean socks?.. how are they getting dirty?.. Are we talking sweat?.. Are you wearing an inner poly sock?

RE: Dirty Socks
My sock liners clean up real nice, but my white outer socks get very dirty. Some dirt is fine powdery stuff and it seems to do the most damage.

Do you wear gaitors?

RE: Dirty Socks
The dirt is from the trail. Where I hike is mostly dirt and sand. Gaitors, not a bad idea.

I assume he didn't use his socks for that purpose.

What is wrong with dirty socks? Why would you expect them to be clean?

RE: Dirty Socks
I got tons of dirt in my shoes the first time I wore running shoes on the trail. The dirt particles were so fine that they permeated the breathable shoe material and collected around my toes.

And if yer hiking socks aren't getting dirty...then you AIN'T hiking!
