Oops, sorry violin, I didn't click your link before I posted mine, and I am far from right wing, I can't stand the right wing conservatives as much as I can't stand left wing liberals. I too am registered independant.

RE: Oilman's View of ANWR
The sooner we plunder all the oil, the sooner big buisness and the U.S. goverment will be forced to invest in renewable energy like wind, wave, solar, ect. I,m afraid that as long as it is cheaper to use oil, we will be a slave to the powers that be.I wish I wasn,t such a cynic, but from my experience, the majority of Americans these days prefer comfort over conscience.

Yeah, there's oil there. Now it's time for the EIR/EIS to determine what drilling could mean to the ecosystem. Until then, it's all just speculation and "phoney" descriptions.

BB - so you too are able to just sit back and let someone go on and on thinking he's right while you bask securely in the power of the knowledge that he or she is completely full of sh!t?

RE: Oilman's View of ANWR
The best way to make a statement about this is what wtrhog and LeSubtil have suggested. If we buy products that use alternative sources of energy, companies will produce those products at lees of a cost. If you feel that strongly about all of this Rosey, go out and buy one of these. Until we start utilizing alternative sources of energy on a mass commercial basis, we have to drill for oil anywhere we can, and you contribute to that need roseymonster, just like the rest of us.

Yes - it's fun to watch these politicians turn lies into logic, and watch people gobble it up. I guess it all boils down to common sense violin - Do you want our country to depend on others for things and have 20 more caribou in the world, or do you waste the Caribou, or make them graze somewhere else and be self reliant?

RE: Oilman's View of ANWR
No doubt I do. But I try to make changes where I can. I drive a motorscooter that gets 100 mpg. I ride a bike that produces zero emissions.

Unfortunately, as wtrhog has suggested, I think it will require a forced change, be it by running out of a resource or by legislation (unlikely given the current admin.) So why not start changing now by NOT drilling for any more oil?

RE: Oilman's View of ANWR
I suggest we put all the caribou on treadmills.

It would solve two problems: they'd generate electricity and we wouldn't be able to live without them.

I make a living in the auto industry in a plant that produces V-engines and am happy to see that Ford is rolling out an Escape that utilizes a hybrid gas electric powertrain. Unfortunatly, this system will be supplied by a Toyota subsidiary. Vedy Scary!

WOW did this thread blow up!!!

Funny numbers gives fuzzy math.
Where o' where are you people getting your numbers.

Gerbil power is the answer!!!! Just ask Richard Gere!!!!

Piss and moans!!!!! good one Rad!!!!!!!

Sure ANWR is a spectacular place, the American "Serengeti" with vast herds of migrating caribou and best of all it belongs to US; but if you truly care for wildlife and preservation of animals you should focus your attention on the REAL endangered species of the world. Caribou that are millions strong in that area should be the least of your crips when cheetahs, tigers, rhinos, whales, etc, and the 600 gorillas left in the Congo. I wonder how much of a impact this drilling would have on the migrating population of 3 mill for 15+yrs..
Drilling be it now or in the future, we are heading in there.

Mark Herndon does appear to be real. I found a website on Google which I saw earlier. The site is down now, but his partner's site which links to his is up.

I notice that Gordon who said he had seen the story elsewhere was quick to pop up and reinforce his argument, but has dissappeared since I asked him about his alleged sources. I think he is the purveyor of false information!

What?s all this fuss I hear about endangered feces? That?s outrageous. Why is feces endangered? How could you possibly run out of such a thing? Just look around you ? you can see it all over the place. And besides, who wants to save that anyway?

I find it appalling that in the year 2002 we are still dependent on fossil fuels when there are many other alternatives. However, until humans stop being the self-serving species we are it will never change.

The auto industry should be forced to produce vehicles that only get better than 30 miles to the gallon, and no, don't tell me it can't be done, it can at little cost to the auto makers.

But with the ultimate earth destroyer in office and in bed with big oil, who is in bed with auto makers, it will not change.

I have absolutely no hope for the future of this planet and the species that inhabit it, humans are their own worse enemy.

What a bunch of crap! The average mpg has gone down for the first time since 1986... gas is still cheap unless you need a #&%!$ load of it. Is this really a concern? The Government gave us all a tax break, AND set up their energy policy with Enron (which in turn scammed CA out of our budget surplus). There is NO shortage of fossil fuels! Drive what you can afford... gas may reach 3.00 or more per gallon (and that's cheap compared to what they pay in some countries). It's a lifestyle CHOICE! Bush has and is actively trying to help the oil/energy industry. As long as he's not selling his influence (which is being looked into now in regards to Enron/California) no biggee... in other words if you drive a v10 pen!s mobile don't b!tch about what it takes to fill the gastank, you bought the behemoth

Squirrel is a weasel
You don't know #&%!$ about alternative energy.

What would it take in wind alone to offset the energy potential of 2000 acres along the coastal plains of ANWR?

Answer: One barrel of crude (42 gallons) generates ~520 kilowatts of electricity. On average, one operating windmill on property managed by the BLM generates ~178 kilowatts of electricity per day. Thus it would take about three windmills to equal the electricity from one barrel of oil. Windmills on BLM land take up about three acres of land each.

If ANWR ultimately produces one million bbl of oil a day, then it would take three million windmills covering nine million acres of land to equal the energy tapped from a tiny strip of ANWR.

Or, when put into perspective, nearly every acre of Connecticut and Massechusetts would be blanketed by windmills.

From the Washington Times.

Sounds good to me!

But I thought they were going to put 'em somewhere out in Montana er somethin'? <G> A half million acres here, a half million there... They won't even be missed, <VBG>

Lindsey Williams, the speaker in the link from a couple of posts earlier by 'precision', is a minister who preached to the workers in the oilfields of Alaska for years (which means dispensing dishonesty is nothing new for him).

How did he become so enlightened about the presence of vast quantities of hidden petroleum there? Maybe, he should tell the geologists where to find the phantom oil.
