You going to make the Ozarks ECT Bear? I'm going to try and do both. If the roads are clear. If it snows in NC and you come to ARK. let me know, I may hook up with you and Mozark. If we don't get to do Linville.

The impression I get is that the way to go is through Linville Falls to NC 183 to 1238 (Kistler Mem. H/W) headed south along the ridge to the Babel Tower TH. but I have no idea where along the ridge the TH is.

yeah hoi, that's how i'll be coming in unless somebody else says different. the trail head is just about where the little 1238 is on that map you posted. i was just wondering if there was a convenient access from the south end of the kistler memorial highway.

I've only been there via 221 and really can't give you any insight on the other roads.Iffin I am not mistaken skiracer,Swissmiss and Rolex use 183 and they could give you their opinion. They will also be coming from the same direction as you baume and HOI.I come in from the south.

The Kistler memorial Highway is a dirt/gravel road and the only things on it are trailheads!

It's been quite a while since I've been in the Linville area...can anyone tell me if the Kistler memorial highway is the "washboard" road that goes past the parking lot for Linville Falls?
I've only been up that particular road once (to Wiseman's View, as I recall), and nearly gave myself whiplash in the process.

Rolex and I are backing out of this trip. We have a new chocolate supply, so we'll need to make it to an ECT soon. We'll probably wait for an easier, warmer hike though.

Gee, I just read through this mega thread to see exactly what was planned. Whew, I'm exhausted. It would be more convenient for those with a long drive on Sunday to reverse the backpacking trip. Is there a particular reason why those wanting to do it in reverse shouldn't? We could meet at the same camp that afternoon. Tell me about the hike out from camp to Babel? It sounds like less than an hour hike at most! Okay, you locals have I interpreted this thread correctly?

Making plans in the Ozarks!!
