42 lbs. w/ 3 liters of water. I remember the days when this used to be a "light" pack for me. Now, these extra clothes are killing me.

I even brought Belle to school with me so we can bug-out from here (that will save the hour of traveling time that it would take me to go home and fetch'er).

Home safe and sound after side trips to Linville Falls, Mast General store and the honey stand.

As always, it was an interesting trip with great people.

I think one of the most interesting things was the Cold Mountain Approach Shelter. More later...

RE: Full Moon at Shining Rocks
We got in on Sunday night and had some lasagna for dinner followed by that Ben&Jerry's chunkey monkey I was talking about all weekend. We decided that we would not be buying warmer bags though - just bring warmer clothes for the nights dropping below 15 degrees.

We had a great time this weekend with everyone. Who is going to write the trip report? Sarabelle?

How cold did it get? And what kinda bag did you have (and it's rating)?

Also did anyone sleep under a tarp or just on a pad (no tent)?

I don't know about anyone else on this trip, but it was way too cold for any moon sightings...except for the one in the sky.

RE: Full Moon at Shining Rocks
We have a good 3 season tent and Cat's Meow bags rated to 15 degrees. We each wore long johns. Rolex was comfortable and I was freezing. I was shivering so much by Saturday morning that I was nauseous. Going for a hike really fixed that though. I'd have to guess at the temperature, but I think the low on Friday night was probably 15 degrees and the high on Saturday was in the low 20's (this is above 5000 feet). This did not include the blistering winds that created quite a windchill. Our equipment would have been fine for me if there weren't such strong winds or if the temp was 10 degrees warmer. Thank goodness we found the Cold Mountain approach shelter - but I'll leave that story to someone more eloquent.

RE: Full Moon at Shining Rocks
Did anyone tarp it or just flop their bag down on a pad? Or was everyone cooped up in tents?

RE: Full Moon at Shining Rocks
I had a zero TNF ultralight bag and a Walrus Zoid tent. I was very comfortable throughout the night. Baume66 had a tarp. We didn't stay cooped up in the tents, we sat around the fire and chatted!

We were told that the wind chill was -11 degrees.

RE: Full Moon at Shining Rocks
Steve - Someone had a Sil Shelter type set up, I remember seeing it, but I don't know who? (Tarping it)

I had a Moonstone down bag that did a great job. Joyce said it was rated to 15 and I needed every last dang degree of feather!!

The snow on Saturday morning was pretty cool..

Especially when nature called, the snow flew and the wind blew..LOL!!

PS. Yes, I'm back at work, flights were uneventful, thank God!
I miss y'all already!
