MRE's
While in the process of moving this week, my roommate told me of a place (Marc's) where they were selling MRE's for 50 cents per meal. At that price I loaded up on them (everything from burritos to turkey and gravy) HAs anybody eaten these before, do they taste any good, any special cooking directions?

RE: MRE's
I like them. Just put the entree in boiling water or dump it on a plate and microwave it.

I am pretty sure they are laden with preservatives, but they taste ok. I usually only carry one with me cause they are pretty heavy.

RE: MRE's
Buddha,
I don't know if they still put those little white square things that look like a piece of gum in MRE's. But a word of warning, IT MAY NOT BE GUM. A buddy of mine took a scout group out for a week long trip and they took MRE's with them. And well..... anyway he finds out later from an old army guy that it was a laxative and not gum. I don't know what it really is but I thought I would pass that along.

RE: MRE's
They're O.K. I like them when they have the little heating pouch with them. The drawback is they are heavy. O.K. for an overnighter, I guess.

RE: MRE's
One of the llama hikers this past time brought some MRE's and they served him well. I think they are a little heavy unless you take only the items you want and can save weight some other way (e.g., carry less fuel).

If you do a search you can find some previous threads on MRE's also.

IMHO it is purely a matter of preference for the taste and convenience vs. weight.

RE: MRE's
I love em! They are loaded with fat and carbs though. They would be ideal for backpacking if they just weren't so heavy and big. Did you get any of the vegetarian ones? Love those little rolls of hard candy and the little tobasco bottles that are included!

RE: MRE's
yea, what bacpac said

also - If you can get the accessory pack with them, it?s well worth the purchase. There?s a lot in there that can help you out:

Good Spoon
Matches
T.P
Gum/Candy
Drink (coffee or hot chocolate)
Dessert (brownie, cookies and other chewable sugar)
Wet Nap

The food is good for base camp, just stay away from the Spanish side dishes -----

RE: MRE's
The shelf life for MRE's is officially five years. I suspect they will last longer than that, but I would hate to get botulism on a hike.

Check the date, before you chow down.

RE: MRE's
I bought a case (12) of Mil*Spec MREs. They came in 4 varieties and each one I had was pretty good. Nice thing is that it takes no prep no heating is really needed. On the other hand, they are heavy and since everything is in a box and a pouch, there is a lot of trash to clean up. I ate about half of the ones I bought, I'll probably save the rest for when I take siblings out on the trail.

RE: MRE's
If you are packing MRE's you certainly want to open them up and strip out all the excess stuff first. I just pack the main foil pouch and a desert if the kids haven't swiped it.

RE: MRE's
I love MREs but they are heavy. If you live on them for 2 to 3 weeks at a time like I have had to do, you will wish they that did come with a laxative!!

The old c-rations (combat rations) were better in my opinion. I've had c-rations that dated back to WWII era.

They don't taste bad (when you're starving) but there's like 2000 calories in there!

RE: MRE's
I used to take the c and k rations too,but not the whole box, just the good stuff. The local dollar store started selling the entrees for $7 per dozen and side dishes at $4 per dozen. they weigh 4 to 8oz each, have 250 to 280 calories, and a pretty good nutritional balance. I take 2 teenage boys with me for day trips and weekenders and the MRE's fill them better than freeze dried ever did.

RE: MRE's
I buy the entrees not the meals. I like em for a change of taste and the convinience of no cook. I get um at longlifefoods.com.
