When I lived in TX, most people went to AR or OK to backpack. One place they like was the Ouchitas (sp?).

Don't come to Arkansas to hike, it sucks. Check out Matt's trail database instead. Trail Finder

Where are you in Texas? Palo Duro Canyon in the Panhandle or there are some neat places around Lake Ray Roberts near Dallas. Let me know where you're at and hopefully I can give you some info.

Mountainchick, I think you mean Lake Ray Hubbard near Dallas. I lived in Tx for 15 years and have visited most of the places mentioned. I first got drunk and stoned at Lk Texoma and have spent much, much time there. Texoma really doesn't have much in the way of trails but it's good for canoing along with the Red River but expect to see lots of skiiers. Dinosaur is way too small for backpacking. The best backpacking by far in Tx is Big Bend, but not in the summer. You also may consider some of the Gulf Coast stretches.

Go to Guadalupe N.P. in west Tex, you can hike to the highest point in Tex. by way of the Guadalupe Peak trail. This part of Tex.will put you in striking distance of Carlsbad Caverns, N.M. and Big Bend N.P. All mountains and desert and not too crowded.Beware of all roads leading north from Mexican border area. All have customs roadblocks with dogs and aggressive questioning and trunk inspections. So much for freedom of movement! But this area is really worth the trouble.

Be prepared to drive for a few hours. My favorites close to home (Houston) are the Lone Star Trail and Lake Somerville State Trailway. I prefer Caprock Canyons State PArk over Palo Duro Canyon, has about 25 miles of trails plus a 64 mile rail to trail apth.

Go to Guadalupe Mountains NP. It's free to enter. There are five biomes. Where else can you begin a hike in the Chihuahuan desert and 4 miles and 2,500 vertical feet later be in a forest of Fir and Pine? And it's the only place in Texas where there are Aspens. Go in the winter and you'll be lucky(actually I consider it unlucky) to see someone else in the backcountry and might actually encounter some snow above 8,000ft. I don't know where you live but it's an 8 hour drive from Austin. Check out Carlsbad Caverns if you go.

Leatherneck, check my personal web page for deatils on Palo Dura. You can access the link from my colorado site listed in my profile. Drop me an E-mail if you can't find it. The canyon is awesome! You'll love it.

Dunk, nope, Lake Ray Roberts it is. I did a trip report on it which can be viewed on my personal site the same as the above. Maybe you should check out that area. It's pretty cool.

Have a great time Leatherneck. The Air National Guerd is sending me to Wichita Falls for 5 weeks in February. I will be hitting the canyon again one weekend for sure. Last time I was there, it was winter but the temps were in the 80's. Let me know what you think.
