Death
Today I took my cat to the vet to be out down. Snowball would have turned 19 years old this fall. We got her as a kitten when I was four years old. She had arthritus so bad she could barly walk. It was time to let go. I just needed to post so that I felt better. I dont remember life with out that cat. It will be strange to not have her around.

RE: Death
That sucks... My dog is having siezures and I really dred the day he goes. Be happy the cat had a good life. If we lived forever we would suffer, so dying is better!

RE: Death
I have a little inkling as to how that must feel. My dog and cat are both old and have been in our family since before the kids were born. I dread the day they pass.

At least her pain is over.

RE: Death
It is really hard to see a pet you had since childhood get old and suffer. Condolences.

RE: Death
Be comforted by the fact that you did what was best for Snowball.

I had Claudell, a 15 year old lab, put down in April of 97. It was one of the darkest days of my life. I visit his gravesite occasionally. It's in a large wood (our old stomping grounds) that will be undisturbed for many years to come.

RE: Death
My condolences as well. I have always thought that grief is a measure love for the one that was lost. Deep grief doesn't exist without deep love.

RE: Death
My g'friend recently lost her border collie of 15 years. She also had severe arthritis and many other problems, and could barely walk.

I differed with my gfriend who insisted on keeping Lady alive as long as possible. Lady should have died two years ago when she had a stroke. By that time she was clearly in decline, but Mary took her to the vet and snatched her from the grim reaper.

These last two years were not quality time for that old dog. There comes a time when we should go, and to keep someone on after then is cruel and senseless. Whether animal or human.

I share your pain A-girl. Had to put my 14 year old cat to sleep last March. It's for the best...they don't have to continue to suffer.

RE: Death
Truely sorry, Ms.Adventuregirl. But at 19 (that's old for a cat), she lived a prosperous life.

I get teary-eyed just thinking of the day when Buddur reaches that point...and he will only be 4 this Sunday.

Maybe you could carry one of her old toys or something in your pack on your next hike - so she could be with you?

Take care of yourself ...

Better hope this cat doesn't curl up next to you!

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours.

His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means they have less than four hours to live.

Well..... That reminds of something I heard some years ago that I couldn't make up if I tried.

It was one of those "friend of a friend" situations, and this guy was talking about a good friend of his who had died of AIDS.... And He Said....

"Nope!  He warn't no junkie and he warn't no fag, he just got a-hold of some bad pu$$y."

And everyone within earshot of that *at the memorial service* were struck dumb.

A Day in the Life of Oscar the Cat

David M. Dosa, M.D., M.P.H.

Since this article has no abstract, we have provided an extract of the first 100 words of the full text and any section headings.

Oscar the Cat awakens from his nap, opening a single eye to survey his kingdom. From atop the desk in the doctor's charting area, the cat peers down the two wings of the nursing home's advanced dementia unit. All quiet on the western and eastern fronts. Slowly, he rises and extravagantly stretches his 2-year-old frame, first backward and then forward. He sits up and considers his next move.

In the distance, a resident approaches. It is Mrs. P., who has been living on the dementia unit's third floor for 3 years now. She has long forgotten her family, even though . . . [Full Text of this Article]

Dr. Dosa is a geriatrician at Rhode Island Hospital and an assistant professor of medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University — both in Providence.
