As much as I would love to see that river again I gotta say no. I'm involved with a trip to Peru in Feb. and I'm not sure when in Feb. thats cutting it a bit close to end of the month. You guys are gotta dig it though.

I'm open any weekend in January.
Lets nail down a date so I can put my Vac time down on the calendar at work.

If it's the buffalo trail, i can scan some stuff and e-mail it to you. If you've never done the upper buffalo, you'll like it. It's pretty wild.

Most likely date is Jan. 25-27. See the updated list of people posted the other day.

Route is undecided yet. I was looking at the Richland Creek area today and it looks pretty good. Between that and the Buffalo River area, Ozark Highland Trail and other areas, there's plenty to choose from.

BTW I'm referring to the Richland Creek Wilderness, not the campground (mentioned in the link), although that could be used as a jumping off point.

RE: Ozarks fall/winter ECT
Here's another link to the Richland Creek Wilderness

Another possibility mentioned by Mozark is Hemmed-In-Hollow

Trlhikr is there any way you can post a link to maps of the Buffalo River area you mentioned?

One request
On the last day, can we plan for kinda low miles (out by noon). Some of us will have several hours to drive to get back home.
Thanx

This is a pretty good site. Click on "Visit Your Parks" then select Buffalo National River.

http://www.nps.gov/pub_aff/index.htm

Hemmed-in-hollow is definetly a must see also the Goat Trail but it would have to be a customized trip. The kind of thing where you might camp some place and do some day hikes.

RE: Ozarks fall/winter ECT
Wild and rugged is what I'm looking for. Scenic. And something that can be hiked for at least three or four days.

Since many folks will be coming in for the weekend it'll also have to have an access point after the first or second day of hiking.

Walkindude - Just for you I am willing to Night Hike!

Steve - I think we should settle on a three day backpacking trip down the Buffalo River Trail. In one way or another it offers everything mentioned above!

RE: Ozarks fall/winter ECT
I agree with mozark, there are several places for people to join in later. If you leave from Ponca and hike to Kyle's landing it is a good day's hike (about 10 miles).

People who want to come on saturday can join in there and hike the rest of the way to Pruitt's landing on HWY. 7 (about 17 miles).

That will get people out early Sunday for the trip home.

I was planning to head out today for Joyce Kilmer/Slickrock but work and the events of yesterday held me up. Gonna try to take off next week.

The woods would be a great place to regain a sense of sanity.

You have to fish that river for small mouth...I caught a beauty when I was there. I was out solo so no one else saw it and the pictures just did'nt show how big and beautiful it was(I let it go so it's still in there waiting on you!

RE: Ozarks fall/winter ECT
wolfsister & steve hiker

Well we tried, we took a long weekend and went up to the buffalo to try to get the TV and radio coverage out of our minds and try to relax for a while.

It was ok as long as we were busy but when everything settled down, all we could really think of was what has happened in the past week or so.

We came home worn out from worrying about all of this. I know it wasn't suppose to work like that but it did. Hope it gets better.....

Cool. Or at least, nice try at getting away from the madness.

Which trails did you take? Anything that would make a good January hike?

So far the Buffalo River area and Ozark Highlands Trail are the main contenders. Mozark is hiking a stretch of the OHT between Richland Creek and the Buffalo River in October and will give us a report.
