Bama lost it's starting QB to an ACL tear. He played the first series of the 3rd qrt. We were up 31-0. Why was he even in the game? Why? We were looking at an 8 win season, now we'll be dang lucky to get 6 and get to a bowl.

SEC refs are at it again. They had 2 very questionable calls in the days 2 biggest games. I'm not trying to take anything away from Auburn or UT. Heck, I was even pulling for Auburn. As the commentator during the UF-UT game said, those two teams deserved overtime.

One other thing, Ainge is a major playa. How does UT find a stud QB to come in as a freshamn, every 4 years? Simply amazing.

I'd heard about those two freshmen at UT, but wow!....they were great to watch. I couldn't stay awake for the end of the game.

Auburn's offense plays like crap the whole game and then pulls it out at the end. It's too bad that there had to a penalty. A hurricane sympathy gift.

Buddha Bear.....the Buckeyes are winning close games. Be thankful.

West Virginia was LUCKY. They should of crushed Maryland. 5 turnovers for pete's sake. WTF...I'll take it.

Until next weekend.....

That UT-UF game was one of the most enjoyable college games I've watched in a while. Those two teams really duked it out. I couldn't believe how evenly matched they were. Congratulations, Chili, and all the toothless Vol fans out there.
That sucks about your QB, Dayhiker. Everyone is wondering the same thing as you. Should have had the trainers and vendors playing after the first touchdown.
Ummm... someone said BC was gonna fall to the UConn Huskies. Bad pick. Eagles soar!
Congratulations, Violin. I'm going to restrain myself from making bad jokes about Kent St. and wish you enough wins to make it to a bowl game against the Jayhawks.
Speaking of the Jayhawks, they played a poor game in Evanston. I'm sure that Northwestern is a somewhat decent team, but KU helped make them look like contenders. It will be good to get back home. KU plays Texas Tech, who put up 70 points on Saturday. Should be a fun game.

The call at Auburn was the correct call although the new rule sucks.
The call at UT was atrocious. Should have been offsetting penalties. Not to mention they gave the Vols more time by not starting the clock after the penalty.

Dayhiker, sorry about your qb but if you remember his 1st start was at Arkansas 2 yrs. ago when the other guy got hurt.

Dunadan, KU takes a step backwards.

I'm not sure the Auburn call was the correct call from the stand point that he actually landed on top of another LSU teammate not AU. However, because UT plays AU in a few weeks I was pleased with the way the game turned out.

It wouldn't be right if the UT/UF game was not laced with a little controversy. Yeah, the personal foul in the UT/UF game was terrible. However, an offsetting penalty would have also stopped the clock. I'm really sick of ESPN making such a big deal out of the situation. UF was not exactly playing a whole lot of defense and should have already put this one in the books. Have they already forgotten the phantom catch of 2 years ago, or the 01 UT Swamp victory that would have been a rout if not for series of bad calls?

I disagree that the personal foul called on Florida should have been offsetting. Both teams had been pushing each other all night long. IMO the reason the Florida player got the penalty was that he swung and hit the UT player in the head. If he had pushed him back no penalty would have been called at all.

Thanks Dunadan. A win is a win but Rutgers has to fix a few things quick or they'll get killed in conference play. The first half was a lot of fun but I ate my fingernails through the second. I'm not sure they'll be ready for a bowl game this year, unless its against a midwestern basketball school or something.

I thought that it should have been a no call, maybe a verbal.

Of course the ref may have been yelling the whole time and felt like he was being ignored.

but, even if the FL guy did "swing" at the TN player, it's not like he tried to lay him out or anything.

Ah, yes, I remember that attitude from '79. In fact, the vast majority of Trojan fans left at halftime with 'SC up 21-zip. Oops! Forgot the game is 4 quarters, not two. When we told our friends in the USC dorm where we were staying that the game ended in a tie, they thought we were joking. So, we like the "not worried" attitude - keep it up! GO NIGAL!

I was out of the office yesterday and too swamped today until now.

I understand that the political sseason is upon us, and everyone is trying to be politically correct, but it’s time to face reality. While Florida/UT was a great game, I don’t expect to hear chili crowing too hard this year.

With two disciplined but young teams you expect the penalties to even out over the course of a game. But when one team is flagged for 8 penalties for 77 yards and the other gets 1 penalty for 5 yards, you wonder.

I saw some Tennessee linemen making blocks that could have been called holding, or blocks in the back, but I figured that the refs were just calling a loose game and letting the teams play. Then, at one point during the game, the CBS announcers talked about how the officials missed an obvious motion penalty against the Tennessee backfield.

But the thing that stood out to me, early in the game, was the one penalty that the refs did actually decide to call on Tennessee. The Tennessee offensive tackle stood up before the ball was hiked. Here’s this huge guy just standing upright on the field and there’s no whistle. The gator defensive end stands up and starts pointing and there’s still no whistle. After a few seconds of pointing like crazy the refs finally blew their whistles and ran in to stop the game. It really looked as if they were trying to figure out how they could ignore that call too.

As far as the last couple of officiating blunders, here’s the USA Today article about those sorry mistakes:

USA Today

The official was standing right there and had the best view in the stadium to call the penalty after UT back Jonathan Wade slapped gator receiver Dallas Baker in the facemask and Baker retaliated. During the game, the CBS announcers talked about it being a bad call. On Sunday, the ESPN sports analysts talked about how bad a call it was. They had a discussion about how officials should not control the outcome of a game by making such an obviously bad call. USA Today wrote their article on how bad those calls were.

SEC head of officials, Bobby Gaston (who was at the game), said that the Baker-Wade exchange should have drawn offsetting personal foul penalties, but that there was nothing he could do to change the call.

Gaston also noted that the officials failed to start the game clock, when the ball was ready for play. Tennessee stopped the gators on 3rd down with 43 seconds left in the game. Then the official called that mistaken personal foul penalty on the gators. The officials should have started the clock when they placed the ball down after marching off that 15-yard penalty. The gators would have then run the clock down to 19 seconds by using the entire 25-second clock. Instead, the clock remained stopped, and Tennessee got that extra 25 seconds to run a couple of plays to march down field and get within 50-yard field goal range with 6 seconds remaining.

It’s too bad when the officiating is so obviously poor that everyone in the country knows about it.

That being said, by God that game lived up to all my expectations! What a classic! Florida knew that Tennessee would come out running and Tennessee was still able to run the ball down their throat. It was an amazing display of power football. Florida answered with a balanced offense that made two long drives. It was back and forth, nip and tuck, exciting the whole way.

There were two feel good stories in that game, from my perspective (and I see that others agree). Tennessee’s freshman quarterback, Ainge, was incredible. He came into a pressure packed game and drove his offense when he had to. Especially on that last drive. He made some clutch third down throws, he made a clutch fourth down throw, and he didn’t turn the ball over in the clutch. Ya gotta love that. Then there was the place kicker. You had to feel so sorry for that guy after he missed the extra point. Then he gets to come back and make the game winning kick from 50 yards out! Just amazing!! That was all about second chances. It was all about redemption!!!

Ya got the W, chili. I Hope the rest of your season plays out well.

My wife, Denise, was at her mother’s so it was just me and my faithful dog, Simba. Denise has said that I scare her sometimes during gator games because I get to yelling and jumping. I’ve always looked at it as a healthy passion.

So there I was, I’m finished watching the game and I’m fuming about the pathetic officiating. Then I start to calm down and realize that Florida won a couple of years back on a horrible call where our receiver dropped an endzone pass and they called it a touchdown. Granted, it wasn’t an entire game where you wondered how much the refs had been paid, but it was a horrible call that went in Florida’s favor nonetheless. Then I realized that it was just a game, and my team had played well enough that I was very satisfied.

It was about that time that I noticed Simba was not laying at my feet as he usually does. Did I let him out earlier and forget? No, he should be here. I walked back into the bedroom because he sometimes sits and looks out the door there. Where was he? Then I got down on my knees and looked under the bed. There was Simba hiding under the bed and I couldn’t get him to come out for anything.

Ya know, maybe I am just a tad too passionate about college football.
