Northwestern scores 16 on Ohio State? Texas barely survives Oklahoma State? Iowa squeaks past Purdue? Ole Miss makes Florida (over-rated) miss? Hogs take TN to six overtimes?
You just have to chalk it up to college football. It's a crazy game, and crazier this year than most.
Colorado beat Kansas St. No real surprise, because it was a hard-fought game at high altitude. Either team could take any of the SEC teams, I think.
Looks like Jawja is the flagship team in the SEC now. Possibly LSU. I really thought Bama was going to hold on, but that last offensive series of theirs was just offensive.
Congrats to Penn State. Bet they wish they could replay the Iowa game.
Jayhawks, (just like I said!) came back down to reality against the mighty Bears of Baylor.
How about them Fighting Irish?

If we are struggling against N'Western and Cinci, I can oly say two things.

1. We are overrated.
2. It goes to show how bad the PacTen and Big 12 suck.

What a game! I feel like I should be giving out congrats to Arkansas. They had a personality this week. Hopefully after 6 OTs and pulling out a win by the skin of our teeth will help this young and walking wounded team gel. Of course, after watching some highlights and noticing the defensive containment problems again, this has to be the most inexperienced team Phil has ever put on the field. Our lines look highschoolish.

This year was labeled as the year of the QBs. However from top to bottom, the year of mediocre would be a much better description with the exception of Miami. Being ranked in the top 25 means nothing this year.

Not too impressive to beat Stanford, clearly one of the worst teams in the country right now. ND fans should be asking "How is it that our offense only scored 17 points off of THE worst defense in the universe?"

Dunadan: I admire your guts in repeatedly putting your predictions down on paper.

It's been fun seeing two of my favorite teams at the top and undefeated (Sooners and Horns)... they both squeaked by this week though. Sooners did beat a better team and did it in Columbia (vs. the Horns at home). I gotta give the edge to the big OU-UT game to OU, but I'll be pulling for the Horns.

Do Hook 'em horns!

Yes, that Duke/tobacco bit was meant tongue-in-cheek, but a few years ago when Duke Power wanted to cut a swath two hundred feet wide to run powerlines through the Smokies to sell electricity in Tennessee, THAT wasn't cool worth a $#!+, <grrrrrrrr>.

Do they still call themselves the Blue DEVILS? <G>

That was a tough game. Our comeback was great, but we couldn't hold on. We needed a couple of first downs late, but couldn't get it done. The off wee comes at a good time. We need the rest.

How about ND, Dun? I was at the game...wish I was only there for the third quarter. ND has a way of always playing down to the level of their competition...which makes every game scary.

Though Stanford isn't too good, I think this is a quality win for ND...they came out flat, had their second string QB make his first start, and still found a way to win the game. Bob Davie would have found a way to lose it.

The defense looks awesome. The offense gets the job done, barely...

Whatever, South Bend was rocking like it hasn't since 1993...

jeez martyb, stanford came into the game averaging 35 points a game. I can think of a few teams that are worse.

and regarding the ND offense--they aren't good, but who is when you start your second-string QB for the first time?

and yet ND still wins...

bongo, that avg. was very misleading. SU scored 27 against BC, but 1 TD was on a 21-yard 'drive' following a turnover and another was on an int. return, so make that 13 'legitimate' points. You could argue that all 24 points scored against ASU were legit. But then there was the 63 against SJSU, a very poor team. And 2 of the TD's were following turnovers deep in SJSU territory, then 2 more were in the 4th quarter, well after the game was 'over.' So count it 35 legit pts in that one, and that's being generous. Using those arguments, SU's "scoring average" was really more like 24 points, all against unranked teams, and that with most of the key offensive players back from last year's 9-3 team. The 8-point line was a joke - I shoulda taken my life savings and put it on ND.

Oh well, there's always Big Game vs. kal....

Knoxville News is reporting that Casey Clausen suffered a hairline fractured clavicle in one of the last couple of overtimes against Arkansas. Looks like Junior C.J. Leak (who started at Wake Forest as a true freshman), true freshman James Banks, or Sophomore Kelly Washington will start against Georgia. Fulmer said that decision would be made just before the game on Saturday. Clausen is a great QB, but I look forward to seeing someone who can run, avoid a pass rush, and take advantage of our receivers by throwing a bullet more than 20 yds down field.

This just in!!
I received this from a beancounter who is a Seminole Fan. While I usually refrain from participating in the FSU fun,,,,I couldn't resist passing this one on to arc...

CNNfn: Oct 7, 2002. Today Merrill Lynch downgraded the Florida Gators
(ticker symbol: GAY) from Hold to Sell citing slowing production from its
offensive unit. The analyst noted that production in the Mississippi area
has been particularly slow. Reaction in the market has been largely
negative with their stock plummeting to 16 on the Associated Press market as investors dumped season tickets by the thousands. Pressure is expected to be stepped up on CEO Ron Zook to resign who took over for the departed Steve Spurrier, whose connection to the debacle has not been established yet. The first year coach now faces allegations of improperly inflating offensive results with a 51-3 victory over lowly UAB in the third quarter of 2002.
Sources say the SEC (Southeastern Conference) could launch a formal
investigation into the matter. It is not known whether CFO Rex Grossman
(Chief of Football Offsense) will be fired or if he conspired together with
CEO Zook to wreck the offense. Grossman, the former darling of the
industry, was once touted for its higest honor in the Heisman trophy. Those aspirations have surely vanished as this scandal rocks the football world.

Sorry folks, I've been working too much lately to post.
Never fear though, because Uncle Dunny is gonna pick a few.
Texas will remain unbeaten. (How about them apples?) The real Simms will show up and ruin the day for the Sooners.
Iowa St remains the class of the Big 12 North. They will outscore the Kingsbury pass attack.
Kansas Jayhawks will win! (if they pump laughing gas into Colorado's locker room) Remember, you heard it here first.
Kansas State over Oklahoma State, but it will be a battle.
Penn St will squeak by Michigan.
Georgia over Tennessee in the Doghouse.
LSU over Florida in the swamp.
The mighty Fighting Irish juggernaut just keeps on rolling, this weekend.
Last, but not least. Bobby figures out Miami! Florida State pulls the big one! Who would believe it?

Chili, I'll bet it took Kelly Washington 24 years to graduate from high school and the only place that would take him was Tennessee.

'Course what they heck do I know about betting? After six weeks of betting with my buddy, picking three games (to beat the spread) each week, I have a grand total of six winners. My offense is worse than Florida's.

My picks this week:
Florida giving 8.5
Pittsburgh getting 8
Rutgers getting 13

Hopefully someone will read this in time to bet the exact opposite.

Dunadan, you are right, this is one crazy year for college football. Except for the big twelve. They're consistently top heavy again. I've always liked Texas. I liked the old SouthWest Conference. I'm picking Texas to win. Hopefully they won't choke the big game this year. FSU beat Miami? LSU over Florida? Must be all them drugs you been takin' that make you beleive you root for a real football conference.
