It still makes me want to retch Dayhiker. The part with "The Bear" was cool though. You do know he is an Arkansan.” 10:01:00 AM 8/19/03 “I understand that Baylor Collage is trying to "exhume" it's football program in order to make it as prominent as it's basketball program. Flashy new program books with "headshots" of all it's players are some of the ways it's looking to "shoot" for the national championship too. Their head coach refused comment on these moves and suggested waiting for his privately taped conversations to be released. [Nigal ducking and covering]” 10:12:02 AM 8/19/03 You can begin the laughter now... “That video reminds me of a film we watched my senior year. It was about KU's football season in which they went 8-3, and pulled some big upsets. It fired up our team so much that we went out the next night and beat a team that was in contention for state. We were a perrenial basement dweller. I always thought that it was a great motivational tool. However, it was the first and last time our coach did that. Great video, Dayhiker. Thanks for posting that.” 6:19:42 PM 8/19/03 “Ahh, finally, a TRUE fan.” 6:24:52 PM 8/19/03 “I didn't watch the video. I found better use of my time reading selected excerpts from the Watergate hearings.” 8:09:30 PM 8/19/03 “chili36: This might interest you. Sux for us, good for Tennessee: http://insiders1.ezboard.com/ffresnostatefrm1.showMessage?topicID=5794.topic Regardless, I can't wait for that game. Are you going?” 9:31:06 PM 8/19/03 “No, sierra, I am not going to make it. But I think everyone in TN is of the opinion we will find out what the year will look like after the first game.” 9:40:31 PM 8/19/03 “yeah, that's pretty much the story for every team really... it's a nail biting wait and see game. oh well, only 11 more days of nail biting anyway...” 11:19:47 PM 8/19/03 “Boola-booo-la, Boola-booo-la, Boola-booo-la, Boola-booo-la. Just dusted off my raccoon coat, saddle shoes, and my multi-color beany, soes that I'd make Buddah feel right at home. BACK for another year of exciting football action! Unfortunately, I'm leaving. We will be traveling for the entire month of September. I'm am getting together, with a friend, at a sports bar in NJ, to watch the Miami game. We will be somewhere between Stone Mountain NC and Grandfather Mountain NC on September 20. We'll probably stop at Blowing Rock. I would love to watch the Tennessee game, but Denise would probably kill me. Chili, if you can make it over to that area, on that day, I'll take my chances. Before I leave, I just knew that you folks would be interested in some facts from the Florida Football Guide. The famous one...the one with the crocodile on the cover (Hillarious T-shirt seen in Tallahassee (FSU territory): "Florida Football...we always knew it was a croc.") FLORIDA FOOTBALL Florida was one of four schools in the nation to be recognized with a 2002 Academic Achievement Award by the American Football Coaches Association and play in a 2003 January Bowl game. Florida joins Notre Dame and Penn St. as the only schools in the nation to be recognized with twice in the last five years with an Academic Achievement Award by the American Football Coaches Association and play in multiple January bowl games during that same time frame. Florida was recognized with an Academic Achievement Award by the American Football Coaches Association in the Spring of 2002. Seventy-four percent of all athletes from Florida’s 1996-1997 freshman class have graduated. Florida is the only member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), the nation’s most prestigious organization of higher learning, to have its football team be ranked in the top 25 of the final polls in each of the last 13 seasons. The University of Florida is one of only two schools in the nation to have had more than one recipient of the prestigious Draddy Trophy, which is presented annually by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame to the nation’s premier football scholar-athletes. Danny Wuerffel is the only player in collegiate history to win the Draddy Trophy and the Heisman Trophy. 2002 NATION MERIT AND ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLAR RANKINGS (National Achievement Scholars are outstanding minority students who score well on the SAT. I have a source for tickets and I will see what I can do.” 8:42:26 AM 8/20/03 Announced today: “JoePa is coming to a Wheaties box near you.” 8:50:34 AM 8/20/03 BB's 2003 Final Standings Predictions “1. Kirk Herbstreit was walking the sidelines when the video came on. I happened to be watching him and Corso when this happened. Herbstreit stopped dead in his tracks and mouthed the words "That is so cool". He stopped and watched the whole thing and then caught up to Corso.” 9:37:07 AM 8/20/03 “Ummm it seems the JoePa Wheaties boxes will just be in Pa. and surrounding states. Buddha will probably want one.” 9:46:50 AM 8/20/03 “Too bad it's not available in Florida. All those retirees could get their fiber with JoePa.” 9:50:34 AM 8/20/03 “All I will say is .....Look out for the Dawgs!!!!!! They are gonna wup some butt THIS year! And don't confuse them with those Georgia pretenders.” 9:54:04 AM 8/20/03 “Hey BB! Where is Arkansas on that list? Actually, we play Texas,Alabama,Auburn,& Florida in the first 6 weeks. We may be lucky to be .500 or above.” 10:06:42 AM 8/20/03 “HeHe, State Penn should win its first game easily. They play Thumple at Happy Valley. Poor Poor Thumple. What were they thinking?” 10:17:32 AM 8/20/03 “10 more days...10 more LONG days...” 6:06:39 PM 8/20/03 “your standings look good, but I think you transposed #1 and #18” 10:59:56 PM 8/20/03 “BB's rankings prove that there is a lot of cheap beer in Ohio. Dude, you should really wait until the season begins before you start tailgaiting.” 11:26:23 PM 8/20/03 Two words..... “Mangino Fever.” 11:49:23 PM 8/20/03 “Ahhhh, those preseason prognosticators. Too many drugs...too little brain cells. Jeff Sagarin (respected prognosticator- God only knows why) has an awful picking record. You could throw darts at a board and do better than most of those fools. Chili, the game is in Gainesburg this year, but we could watch it on TV. You should have seen me in Port Angeles Washington, when I was hiking in the Olympics. Here I was, in the corner, in this little bar, in this little town, just screaming my head off at the Florida/Tennessee game. The locals didn't know what to make of me. Not sure they knew where Florida or Tennessee were. They probably know, in Blowing Rock.” 5:35:30 AM 8/21/03 “I'll be gone for a while, so when the Buckeyes beat Washington next week, I wanted to preemptively say.... "Told ya so!" Seriously.... good luck this season to all you college football fans. I know the Bucks will get a run for thier money this year, and hopefully we can repeat, if not, somebody else gets the braggin' rights.... and they are ohhhhh so sweet!” 11:34:44 AM 8/21/03 “The last team to repeat was, uhm, let's see, it was ALABAMA.” 11:38:06 AM 8/21/03 dayhiker “UPI was second fiddle to the AP in those days, it's a weak arguement. lol!!!” 11:39:44 AM 8/21/03 “We were the AP champs in 78 and 79. We were the UPI champ in 79 with USC being UPI champ in 78. Looks rock solid to me.” 11:42:58 AM 8/21/03 “Ohio State is holding Maurice Claret out of the first game. They don't want to have to forfeit. Tony Kornheiser, on ESPN today, said he doubts if Mighty Mo will ever play again for the Buckeyes. Hope you guys are strong in the running back position, BB. Anyway, I have Northwestern to worry about on the 30th. Rock Chalk!” 11:50:16 AM 8/21/03 “Northwestern - no problem. MoClarett - good riddance - Mo Hall and Lydell Ross are great backs, with good heads on thier shoulders.” 11:51:49 AM 8/21/03 “State Penn owes Ohio Snake bigtime! And Mitch-is-gone and I-oh-wah too!” 11:55:11 AM 8/21/03 8 More Days! 8:36:59 PM 8/22/03 “Kansas State 42, California 28. This wasn't the butt-stomping that was promised, but it's a respectable beginning for K-State. Note to future teams on K-States schedule: Throw deep!” 11:12:13 PM 8/24/03 “Scored some tickets for the Michigan-Indiana game in the Big House! Can't wait! I heard Michigan was ranked #4 or something? For once they have a couple easy non-com games and the first three games are at home. I'm praying the decision on how many game Muriece Chicklet will be sitting out will come in the later part of the season so maybe he won't be there when Michigan hands them their a$$ for a hat in Nov.” 11:17:57 PM 8/24/03 “New Coaches poll is out and the Wolfpack moved up one slot. Whooohooooo!!!! Guess we had better practices than maryland :) :)” 7:59:12 AM 8/25/03 “Maurice gets a 6 game suspension. Ohio State plays NC State and Wisconsin during that stretch. Could be bad for the buckeyes.” 8:24:54 AM 8/25/03 “The pollsters didn't move them out of 2nd place in the Coaches poll though. I will be honest and say that I am not one of those idiots who say that I am dissappointed that we have to play an OSU team without Clarett :)” 9:37:58 AM 8/25/03 It's Gameweek! “Get ready for bourbon and cokes, Gameday @ 11, JP SEC game @ 11:30. Ahh, I love it. All this preseason hype goes out the window this weekend. Let's hope the tigers can live up to the preseason expectations.” 12:10:31 PM 8/25/03 “I think Saturday's game will be a pretty good preview of the season we can expect at UT.” 12:22:57 PM 8/25/03 “VOLS SPORT SEC’S BEST RECORD LAST FIVE YEARS Tennessee ranks as the winningest team in the Southeastern Conference over the last five years in terms of victories and winning percentage with a 49-14 mark and a .778 percentage. During that span, Tennessee has appeared in five straight bowl games. The Volunteers have also compiled a 31-9 record in conference games during that stretch, winning two Eastern Division titles and one overall league crown. Going back 10 years, the Vols are second in the league to Florida (102) with 99 wins. The .778 winning percentage ranks sixth nationally among the winningest Division I programs during that span, while the 49 wins ties for fifth. NON-CONFERENCE DOMINANCE Since 1989, UT has amassed a 51-12-1 mark in games against foes from outside the SEC. UT saw its 18-game regular-season non-conference game winning streak snapped following a 26-3 loss to No. 1 Miami last year. It was the first regular-season non-conference defeat since a 21-17 loss to Memphis in 1996. It was also the first non-conference home defeat since a 34-29 decision to No. 1 Notre Dame in 1990, a span of 27 games. FULMER TO TIE DICKEY WITH NEXT WIN Head coach Phillip Fulmer needs one more victory to tie former Tennessee coach and Athletics Director Doug Dickey for 13th place on the SEC’s all-time victories list at 104. Next on the list are former Tennessee coach Johnny Majors and Alabama coach Frank Thomas who are tied for 11th with 115 wins. Fulmer’s 103 total victories ties him for fifth all-time with ex-Florida coach Steve Spurrier for the most wins after 11 seasons as a head coach. Fulmer’s 100th career victory came in the Vols’ 18-10 triumph at South Carolina in 2002. The UT coach tied former Texas A&M mentor R.C. Slocum as the fifth-fastest to reach 100 wins in terms of longevity in his 11th season and eighth game. TENNESSEE IN THE PRESEASON PREDICTIONS * Casey Clausen was listed at No. 26 on the CBS.Sportsline.com preseason Heisman Trophy watch list. He also ranked as the No. 11 quarterback in the nation by Lindy’s and No. 12 by The Sporting News. * Rashad Baker was tabbed as the SEC’s top safety by The Birmingham News, No. 4 by The Sporting News and No. 6 by Lindy’s. He leads a secondary that was rated No. 5 in the nation by The Sporting News with Jabari Greer holding down the No. 7 slot among cornerbacks. Greer was also rated No. 20 by Lindy’s. * Tennessee’s backfield was rated fifth-best in the nation by The Sporting News with tailback Cedric Houston ranking at No. 13 and Troy Fleming jumping in as the No. 3 fullback. The backfield was rated No. 7 by Lindy’s with Houston at No. 12 among running backs. * Scott Wells was rated the No. 9 center by The Sporting News and Lindy’s. * Kevin Burnett was listed as the No. 14 outside linebacker by The Sporting News. * Dustin Colquitt was listed as the No. 2 punter by Lindy’s. * Tennessee’s schedule was ranked as the second toughest in the nation and the SEC by * * The Sporting News. The Vols were also tabbed as having the toughest road schedule. I can faintly hear the sounds of Rocky Top already.” 12:44:39 PM 8/25/03 4:06:59 PM 8/25/03 Three predictions “I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that Army will not finish in the top 25. I will further predict that Army will lose to Navy again. And finally, I predict that Coach Todd Berry will not be invited back for another season.” 4:10:44 PM 8/25/03 “Nice sierrapacktrip! Now for all of those who want to sing along....here are the lyrics. Wish that I was on ol' Rocky Top Down in the Tennessee hills Ain't no smoggy smoke on Rocky Top,,,Ain't no telephone bills Once I had a girl on Rocky Top,,Half bear, other half cat Wild as a mink, but sweet as soda pop,,,I still dream about that Rocky Top, you'll always be Home sweet home to me Good ol' Rocky Top Rocky Top, Tennessee, Rocky Top, Tennessee Once two strangers climbed ol' Rocky Top Looking for a moonshine still Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top,,,Reckon they never will Corn won't grow at all on Rocky Top,,Dirt's too rocky by far That's why all the folks on Rocky Top, Get their corn from a jar * Refrain I've had years of crimped up city life,,, Trapped like a duck in a pen All I know is it's a pity life ,,Can't be simple again *Refrain” 4:14:34 PM 8/25/03 “YeeeeHawwww! That music made me wanta loosen the lid to my corn squeezins. Chili, I hope all of those statistics don't sound like excuses at the end of the season. Look out for the Big 12 this year!” 5:38:33 PM 8/25/03 “1st Dayhiker's video and now your song. You guys really know how to make a guy ill” 7:56:05 AM 8/26/03 “Arky, I am happy to report that since I have moved to Arkansas, I have actually held a pig hat. I couldn't bring myself to put it on, but you have to take these things in small steps.” 8:35:11 AM 8/26/03 “I'll be eating pork this weekend in the Smokies and then again on 9/27 when Bama hosts the piglets.” 8:42:37 AM 8/26/03 “T-minus four days and counting. The mighty Jayhawks take on Northwestern. I've decided that I'm going to imagine that we are playing Kansas State, since Northwestern wears purple and calls themselves the Wildcats. It's our only chance to beat the purple wildcats this year. Rock Chalk!” 8:43:56 AM 8/26/03 Jump to Page << prev
