Fall in the Sierras
I'd like to plan an overnight backpack in the southern sierras for mid-October. I want to head up 395, so the trailhead would need to be on the eastern side of the sierras. Any suggestions for a nice overnight trip where I could see some fall colors?

You'll be able to see the colors from the highway. One that comes to mind is an overnighter over Kearsage Pass to Rae Lakes up through the Onion Valley trailhead. The trouble with the Eastern Sierra is that one night is waaaayy too short a period of time to do anything substantial because you have to climb up, up and up.

Maybe Columbus Day Weekend would be good - that gives me 2 nights. I've also been thinking of a Langley attempt in October.

You would definitely be able to do/see more with 3 days of hiking.
