I'm going out on a limb here, but you could try hard-boiled eggs or got bread, try a grilled cheese sandwhich.

Personally I would recommend the complimentary breakfast buffet at The Empress hotel in Victoria, Canada. It's awesome.

I'm with you, Spock!

Has anyone checked out that 'Ready Crisp Bacon', or is that stuff microwave only?

I usually go for the usual instant oatmeal. No fuss- No mess and hit the trail early... then I just snack non-stop 'til dinner!

I'm w/ bc. Oatmeal everytime. I've tried the backpackers hashed browns and thought they were terrible.

Maybe a bagel?

RE: What's for Breakfast?
I've always eaten Instant Oatmeal, even though everyone says it's as nutritious as cardboard.

I bought fixins' for Ray's cereal, and they arrived last night.
Equal parts:
Corn Grits
Oats (groats)
Millet
Barley
Grind in a hand grinder, in camp bring to boil and let sit awhile.
I'll let you know how it is.

Le Subtil - have you tried the freeze dried fruit bits? They are yummy when added to hot cereals. Probably be good w/ the Ray's cereal.

RE: What's for Breakfast?
Obi brought some of the pre-cooked bacon on the llama trip. We crumbled it up and added it to some reconstituted omelettes. Turned out great.

Oatmeal is great. Consider adding any or all of the following (besides hot water):
a. 1 ounce powdered milk
b. trail mix (e.g. Trader Joe's Tropical Trail Mix)
c. A crunched up Nature Valley Granola Bar

Pre mix in a storage or freezer bag at home. Then just add hot water in camp. Eat out of the bag and pack it out. No clean up!!

Naviguesser has an awesome easy breakfast idea you can drink hot or cold:
1 envelope Carnation instant breakfast
1 ounce powdered milk
1 tablespoon malt

Add hot water if you have it, stir, enjoy.

Bagels are great. I like PB & J on my bagels. Lox and cream cheese is great if you can keep it fresh enough.

RE: What's for Breakfast?
Where does one find FD fruit bits? Never seen those.
I dehydrate all kinds of berries and throw them in the oatmeal sometimes. Probably work in any cereal.

RE: What's for Breakfast?
Being from the South I would recommend grits. They come in instant single serving pouches. Not as good as the real thing, but it works. Lots of carbs for energy.

RE: What's for Breakfast?
1C Old Fasioned Quaker Oats, 1/3C Wheatena, 1/2C Dried Milk, 2T Brown Sugar, dash Cinnamon & Salt, handful of cut up dehydrated apples. Sometimes I breakup and include a Harvest Powerbar also. Place everything in a Zip-Loc Freezer Bag, add hot water and let sit in sleeping bag for 15 min while drinking camp coffee.

I prefer whole grain, high fiber cereals on the trail...not only lots of energy, but it makes the stool hard and keeps the paperwork at a minimum.

Corn pasta is more like an uncontrollable pasta that decomposes into corn mush 5 seconds after it's done cooking.

I've not had that happen to me with the spaghetti, Buddur. If anything, it's a little chewy.
I got corn elbows last nite too, and that's dinner tonight. I'll let you know...

You can get those "shakers" from the store. Just add water into the plastic container(real small), shake, and you got 7-8 good size pancakes. Comes in regular and blueberry. YUM!

RE: What's for Breakfast?
Couscous with dried berries is pretty good, or kashi made overnight. For a short trip, bagels are great. Pan toast them. My last trip I tried Far East Brand couscous. Boil water, add couscous. Sit 5 minutes. It was good.

I've done oatmeal for so long, I've about had it.

RE: What's for Breakfast?
This all sounds really good. Sunshine, Buddur and Le Subtil's recipes especially. Question for Le Subtil, you hand grind before you leave or on the trail? Great tip, using the freezer bag as a bowl for hot water added to a meal. I didn't know that the bags were that melt-proof.

RE: What's for Breakfast?
If I take my Outback Oven, I have scones or cinnamon rolls. They really taste good on the trail.

You can by dehydrated or freeze-dryed omelettes. If you follow the directions, they come out OK.

Also, you can carry fresh eggs in one of those little egg carrier things. However, I have had the eggs break. Always carry it in a freezer bag just in case.

To me, eggs, bread, etc.for breakfast in the outdoors are about as good as it gets. Note: Canned corned beef or spam can spice up an egg breakfast.

Another favorite: pancakes (Kusteaz brand with a few drops of vanilla extract)

Try Kingarthurflour.com for those dried fruit bits. Or, you might check your local grocery - they often have buld dried fruits, many to choose from (banana, mango, pineapple, apricot, cantaloupe, papaya... )

RE: What's for Breakfast?
Prior to the llama hike I met with my friend who is a health and fitness expert. He said that including protein in your breakfast prior to backpacking is a good idea and an efficient way to eat. That is what marathoners do.

I asked him about carbo loading. He said that you do that TWO days prior to going out. The day before and morning of try to get some protein.

Also, he said that replenishing your body (muscles) within an hour to an hour-and-a-half after backpacking is important. Eat something within a short time after you come off the trail.

At the very least, this confirms the value of Dutch oven cooking at Mel's for the successful launch of the llama treks..

Dinner Report:

1 1/2 cup water
6 oz dry - corn elbows
2 tablespoons peanut butter
2 tablespoons dry milk
1 packet crushed hot pepper

1) Set up folding lazy-boy in backyard (remember this from Brighton?) with all gear in reach
2) Bring 3 cups water to boil
3) Pour 1 1/2 c water in cup for tea
4) Add pasta to water slowly, without stopping boil
5) Drink tea while pasta sits 5 minutes
6) Add pb/milk/pepper
7) Enjoy

All the while, watching the sunset.

The water only took one Esbit to bring to a boil, for dinner and a drink. I like that. The amount of water was right on. I think I let it sit a little too long, it was mushier than I liked. The taste was fantastic, and filled me up well.

I have a windbreak I planted in my backyard of 75 blue Spruces, which are 15 years old now, and provide a nice place to pretend I'm backpacking while I watch sunsets.

Phil, crack your eggs into a leak proof container before you leave home.

Malt-o-Meal is my staple. I add a little salt and coffeemate to a premeasured amount of the maple flavor. I carry a little butter too.
