Attention all archers “Where do you all practice? I want to set up a range in my side yard, but I don?t think its legal. From working at camp I have discovered this hobbies, and that I?m very good at it. So I don?t think arrows will be flying over the fence but I don?t want any legal crap. It has been suggested that I go to the local zoning bored and ask them. However, if I do that, then when I do it any way, I won?t be able to plead ignorance.” 10:11:39 PM 8/30/01 RE: Attention all archers “Call your local archery club before you put your eye out.” 10:15:26 PM 8/30/01 RE: Attention all archers “You better check with someone! My family was into archery when I was a kid. We had two or three bales of hay delivered to our back yard for target practice. Lucky no one was killed. That was in the suburbs of Los Angeles. I couldn't imagine trying that now without some sort of enclosure or major backstop behind the bales. Fond memories! After not having shot for many years, as a junior, I entered and took second place in our college's annual archery tournament using a straight fiberglass bow. My fraternity brothers nicknamed me "Rosenhood".” 2:37:38 AM 8/31/01 RE: Attention all archers “I used to practice in an indoor gun range...they had a floor just for archers. It only got noisy when gun slingers were using .357 or .44 magnums. I also practice in a archery range outdoors. Targets were set at 10 meters up to 60 meters...and there were still alot of area behind the targets. Don't set up your own range behind/beside your backyard...you could seriously injure or kill someone. Sometimes arrows have a mind of their own. Equipment failure, fatigue or mistakenly looking at the wrong sight can have disastrous results.” 3:36:40 AM 8/31/01 RE: Attention all archers “Living in farm country does have some benefits - I can shoot the bow in the backyard without worry. It's open field for 4 miles. My friends always bring ou their new toys to play with so I get a chance to shoot a lot more bows/rifles/pistols than I would otherwise. You reminded me that it's time to get the bow out; archery deer season it just around the corner.” 6:29:46 AM 8/31/01 RE: Attention all archers “Well, There goes the neighbors dog.” 6:33:00 AM 8/31/01 RE: Attention all archers “Me and boy shoot in our woods behind our house. Most stand alone targets for archery have pretty good stopping power but you need to be able to hit the target. Like bacpac said, contact a local club.” 8:28:03 AM 8/31/01 RE: Attention all archers “We have a local archery range that TNUSA ( Ted Nugent USA) recently rebuilt/remodeled. Its like $3 a dayfor residence. I used to shoot in the side yard of my apartment before we got a house. No one complained. I also shot in my yard before my dogs took to chasing my arrows.” 8:33:41 AM 8/31/01 RE: Attention all archers “Tea, if you don't check out the rules, your neighbors will. You do live in NJ, afterall. If you don't have the land in your yard, then find a club that offers archery.” 8:40:15 AM 8/31/01 RE: Attention all archers “Ice, when you go down to your local full-service archery shop to purchase your quality, safe equipment, ask them. Many shops these days have their own indoor ranges, particularly in urban areas. Treat archery like backpacking -- go to the people who deal with the equipment and issues every day, and who actually have a lot of experience with it in your neck of the woods.” 11:49:08 AM 8/31/01 RE: Attention all archers “Thanks, I know I don't really have the room, I'm goining by "I hope I don't miss too often". I know I will hit the target 4 times out of five.” 11:53:03 AM 8/31/01 RE: Attention all archers “Ice Tea, I use a trigger release to shoot a compound bow. I was able to hit silver dollar size targets at 50 meters. One time my arrow passed above the backstop (about 4 feet over my target)....I couldn't believe it. It turned out a screw was loose on my cable guide, and it totally messed up the trajectory of the arrow. That's why don't rely on, "I hope I don't miss too often".” 4:04:25 AM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “A slingshot fits in yer pack easier.” 10:37:16 AM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “Le Subtil or anyone else, ever use a crossbow for hunting/target practice? Those muthers are powerful...130 to 150lbs of draw weight...scary!!!” 9:06:46 PM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “I'm looking for 30 to 45 lbs, any thing stronger and I'm shooting threw the target.” 9:28:56 PM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “My kids shot my above ground pool last winter. Just about 6 inches from the bottom. All the water drained out, the ice on top broke the piping. Hey Tea - you'll appreciate this - I won the leaders shoot with .22's at summer camp. Most of the ;guys were good about it! Won a watermelon!” 10:00:03 PM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “What camp? and where the hell have you been??? You haven't posted in ageses.” 10:26:50 PM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “Been to Detroit, Cheaspeake bay, PA (twice), BS camp, regular camping, backpacking. Unemployed and playing hard!!! Hope you had a good summer. We had a BLAST at camp Camp Rodney - Md.” 10:29:40 PM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “I have heard good things about Rodney” 10:34:44 PM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “they are all true - this is our second year there. Tough (on the leaders) first year program. Great aquatics stuff for the older guys - motorboating, waterskiing, lifesaving, lifeguard, kayaking, etc. Good staff. Going to Ockanickin (PA) next year, and maybe Goshen in VA the year after that. will be up at nobi this winter. . . . . . . . . . .” 10:40:46 PM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “I have hear bad things about ockanickin. What weekend will you be ate Nobe.” 10:53:03 PM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “I have hear bad things about ockanickin. What weekend will you be at Nobe.” 10:53:11 PM 9/01/01 RE: Attention all archers “It will be in April. Do tell about ockanickin (email me if you want) - we are going there Nov 16-18th and there for summer camp.” 9:56:14 AM 9/02/01 RE: Attention all archers “I always liked lighter weight bows. I felt like I had more control. m&m - good to have you posting again!” 11:05:06 AM 9/02/01 RE: Attention all archers “M&M, I don't remeber what was wrong with the camp, but I hosted a troop that said that they didn't like it, they gave me a few reasons but I wasn't really paying attention” 11:56:45 AM 9/02/01 RE: Attention all archers “Thanks Phil - real busy with the boys. Thinking of going on the PA hike, just have to do some re-arranging. . . . . .” 12:33:12 PM 9/02/01 RE: Attention all archers “If your house back onto the bottom of a slope or hill at least 20 ft high then you can use it as a shooting range, provided you weed out the rocks that can cause a ricochet. Haybales are worthless as an arrow stopper. An arrow from a 40 lbs longbow can pass through one and keep going. Excelsier and foam are considerably better. Bag targets would be my choice although slightly rough on the arrow. If you lack the hill to bunker the arrows, then check out the local clubs and ranges. Dont even think about shooting without a backstop. A loose screw on your bow, or anywhere else for that matter, and you can change you name to Vlad the Impaler.” 4:22:34 PM 9/03/01 RE: Attention all archers “Or the "B!tch in B block".” 3:40:42 AM 9/04/01
