trips - Fall Peak bagging in the Remote Smoky MountainsTrip Info
Descriptionweather watch!!!! -- current weather at the top of Mt. Mitchell in the Black Mountain Range, similar latitude and elevation. see also webcam view. -- update 9/20/2006 - for those going the entire length, we will be meeting in Davenport Gap Thursday morning between 8-830. From there we will shuttle to Alum Cave Trailhead on NFG Rd. I intend to be on the Alum Cave Trail and hiking by 930, 10am at the latest. Those not going the entire length, you are responsible for arranging your own shuttle. Additionally, I am getting there, with Jackstraw Wednesday night and will be staying in Gatlinburg. If anyone else is arriving Wednesday night, let me know. woohoo! one more week to go! - be prepared for cold weather, I was checking weather on Mt. Mitchell and the highs have been in the low 50s and the lows in the low 30s. In the Smokies, you got be ready for anything anytime. I don't plan on bringing snowshoes or crampons, but I do plan on having warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag. I was in the Smokies in May of 2005 and it snowwed a foot above 5000 feet and temps were below freezing. Also, it is a good idea to bring a lightweight tarp, bivvy or tent. We have spots in the shelter reserved, but it's best to always be prepared. This is going to be a rugged back country hike. Everyone can hike their own hike, since our camping locations are designated. If you plan on getting the peaks with me, be ready for agressive hiking, leaving early in the morning and getting into camp late in the afternoon. The days will include long mileage with a good amount of elevation gain and some rugged bushwhacking. This will be a teamwork oriented trip. Not to sound like a hardon or anything.. --- One spot is open on this trip! first one to claim it gets it! people who have spots claimed: Jackstraw TNwareagle Chili Gem ENS PJbarr ---------------------------------------------- right now this is a public trip, but due to camping restraints, participants will be limited. I may have to be selective on who comes on this trip based on first come, experience and how many reservations I get in the shelters where camping will take place. This trip will take place in the most remote sections of the Great Smoky Mountains. It will include some difficult rugged hiking and bushwhacking. I plan on hiking to Mt. LeConte via the Alum Cave Trail and then take the Boulevard (perhaps a stop at the Jumpoff) over to the AT and camp the first night at Ice Water Springs Shelter. Friday we'll hike to the Tri-Corner Knob shelter and camp and bag several 6000 footers. Saturday we'll bag several more sixers and camp at the Laurel Gap Shelter. Sunday we'll hike back over to the AT camp at the Cosby Knob shelter, Monday night we will camp at Davenport Gap and have an easy hike out on Tuesday morning. Another goal I have on this trip in addition to the sixer peaks is to finish the AT from New Found Gap to Davenport Gap. I've hiked the AT from NFG to Ice Water Springs before and I love LeConte so it's hard to go to the Smokies and not climb my favorite mountain in the south. This will be a rugged hike and we'll be deep with in the back country. Tri-Corner Knob shelter is one of the most remote on all of the Appalachian Trail. It's 11 miles from the nearest road. I hope to bag as many sixers as possible, so there will be a lot of bushwhacking on this trip. Can't friggin wait!
