trips - Kickin' Back on the KickapooTrip Info
DescriptionWe will meet for car camping and other activities at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, located between LaFarge and Ontario, WI. Activities can include hiking, biking, mt. biking, canoeing, kayaking... even horseback riding, with rentals nearby! The area has the spectacular bluffs, valleys and scenery of the "driftless" area, which means it was untouched by the last glaciers. Website: http://kvr.state.wi.us/home/ Map: http://kvr.state.wi.us/home/images/kvr_map_96dpi.jpg Background More than thirty years ago, the federal government began a flood control project on the Kickapoo River; 149 farms were purchased to make way for a dam and reservoir. The landowners were removed, the farm buildings destroyed, and the first phase of construction begun. However, after several starts and stops the project was halted in 1973 for environmental and economic reasons. Controversial from the start, people in the area were understandably outraged that they had sacrificed so much and saw no benefit. In 1996, federal legislation directed the US Army Corps of Engineers to transfer up to 1,200 acres to the Bureau of Indian Affairs in trust for the Ho-Chunk Nation and the remaining 7,369 acres to the State of Wisconsin. That ownership transfer was completed December 28, 2000. Timeline of the events: http://kvr.state.wi.us/home/kickapoo_valley_reserve_timeline.htm The KVR has only been open since 2001, with a visitor's center completed in 2004. Recreation The Reserve offers a variety of recreation: fishing and hunting; horseback, biking and hiking trails; cross-country skiing and snowshoeing; camping and canoeing. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the Reserve trails (except for snowmobiles - in season). Horseback and biking trails are open May 1 - November 15. Hiking is available year round. All visitors are required to purchase a permit. Permits are available at the Reserve Visitor Center and thirteen self-registration stations. You can download an annual visitor permit application form that can be completed and mailed. Please note that trails may be closed on short notice due to wet conditions. Pets must be on a leash or under voice control.
