trips - Hikin' Historical Hysterical TWOTrip Info
DescriptionTRIP CANCELED AT THIS LOCATION.... We did this last year. Will do again this year and see if anyone might want to go. I think this will be at Yellow River State Forest. I'll get details out on that (could possibly be a different unit of Yellow River OR Pikes Peak State Park, McGregor... or even BLOODY RUN!! MOOOOOOhahahahhahaaboooooooooo!) Route to be announced but, c'mon, ya know lizs plans mighty fine trips!! :-) This will include a moonlight hike Saturday night at Effigy Mounds National Monument. Bring along your headlamp and/or flashlight and be ready to hike in the dark. And you never know who you might run into in the woods!??!? Maybe a fur trader? Maybe a tobacco-chewin', stinky soldier of around the Civil War era?!??! Last year we heard about Zebulon Pike, early pioneer forays into the area, and how Native Americans were moved from the area. http://www.nps.gov/efmo/index.htm Date: October 7, 2006 Time: 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Details: Presented annually, these popular activities can include walks along the Yellow River Bridge Boardwalk Trail and hikes the along the Fire Point Trail to the top of the bluff. Effigy mound building culture, the impact of the historic settlement period and moonlit views of the Mississippi and Yellow River Valleys are  featured.  Call after Sept. 22, 2006 for specific information.                                                Moonlight Hike reservations are required and will be taken beginning on the preceding Monday (October 2nd). Call the visitor center for reservations . Fees: No Fee The FREE moonlight hikes look like they've been moved to start more in the late afternoon and continue into early darkness. We will need reservations for it, which I will take care of arranging with some of my favorite rangers there. Following that, we'll share our own tales around the campfire. Mooooooooohahahahaha!! The rest of the trip may take place in our usual haunts at Yellow River State Forest... or maybe some new haunts at YRSF. (Don't think you've seen it all!!) There is much hiking that could be done at Effigy Mounds, also, something like 7 miles in the North Unit and 4-5 miles in the South Unit. And many other parks, etc.
