Description

All right all you lovely “thebackpacker.com” guides and experts -- it's time to plan a weekend backpack trip in Big South Fork. Timeframe is mid-March, and it includes some of the Sheltowee Trace and the JMT.

Spent several days talking to Brenda Deaver and Howard Duncan "Hiking the Big South Fork” and I’ve got a plan. The more I study the map, and read the reference book -- I can see that this is best as a three day hike -- so let's plan on starting on Friday morning, and coming out on Sunday afternoon.

Day 0: (Thursday - 08Mar07) Meet at Peters Mt trailhead. Hang out, car camp, and then the next morning, shuttle all of us to Terry Cemetery where we will start our hike.

Day 1: (Friday - 09Mar07) Terry Cemetery to Maude’s Crack then John Muir Trail to No Business Creek area, consider a side trip to the Boyette Homestead for lunch.

NOTE: The Boyette site has a nice spring. There is an old orchard, headstones, and the chimney of the cabin. The hike to the Boyette site is going to add at least 1.5 miles to the days journey.

Ascend to the JMT Overlook.

NOTE: The hump out of No Business along with climbing ladders up the face of the overlook is a butt kicker then it is at least an 8 mile hike on a steady upgrade to Divide Road. (Most likely our first night will be at either Rough Branch or Alder Branch.)

Day 2: (Saturday - 10Mar07) Ramble along the JMT westward until we cross the Divide Road. Massey Creek to Rock Creek Trailhead, follow the abandoned railroad and Sheltowee Trace to Great Meadow. (Most likely our second night will be somewhere before we get to Great Meadow.)

Day 3: (Sunday - 11Mar07) Northward onto Hemlock Grove, and then return to Peters Mt using the Mark Branch Trail.

Detailed Directions

Getting to the trailhead!

1) From the West entrance, go North on Hwy 154.

2) Turn onto Divide Road, and stay on Divide Road until you get to the Peters Mt Trailhead.

NOTE: For those of you who might be coming to Big South Fork from the North – you can bypass going through the park by following the directions below:

Take Hwy. 92 west to Yamacraw Bridge. Once across the bridge immediately turn left onto Hwy 1363 toward Bell Farm. Once at Bell Farm you will see a Forest Service road to the left that goes toward the Bell Farm Horse Camp. Follow that road a short distance until you see the Peters Mountain road to the right.
