trips - Fall Trip to the Big ZTrip Info
DescriptionHowdy All! Like to round out this year with a nice fall weekend trip at Zaleski State Forest in SE Ohio. Here's some websites & maps to get started: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/forestry/Forests/zaleski.htm http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/forestry/Forests/directions/zaleski.htm http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/forestry/Forests/pdf/zaleski_backpack.pdf Using the last link with the backpacking map, here's the plan (I'm going to steal some of this from Dub's '04 trip-I can see the lawsuits a' coming now..) We will camp at "D" on Friday (second campsite going counter-clockwise), "H" on Saturday, and hike out on Sunday. Feel free to join on Friday or Saturday. Intended route is: November 17th: ABCD 6.1 miles --Use AFED 3.6 miles if you get in late on Friday November 18th: DEFGH 6.4 miles November 19th: HGMNOPQA 5.4 miles Total: 17.9 Miles There will be no scheduled departure from the trailhead--everyone just meet in camp. Personally, I'm hoping to get away from work a little early on Friday, arriving at the trailhead around 5P.M. and taking the 3.6 mile AFED route to Campsite D. However, for those who have time, I would highly recommend the entire ABCD loop for it passes several points of interest (Moonville Overlook, Beaver Pond & Old Ingham Station, Indian Mound) that are worth checking out. There is a kiosk at the trail parking area with a Topo Map and Historical Guide -if they are all gone, the Park Office futher south on State Route 278 should have more on hand. For those desiring a longer stay, there are additional campsites, cabins, and trails at adjacent Lake Hope State Park http://www.dnr.ohio.gov/parks/parks/lakehope.htm Nearby is the old Moonville Railroad Tunnel (grin), if anyone needs directions let me know. WEATHER Being late November, it can be anyone's guess. There have been times when it's in the 70+ degree range, while on other occasions it has snow and freezing cold -so be prepared for anything. Just remember to bring the whiskey and 'shine to keep you warm at night. Some good news is the lack of bugs, heat/humidity, and dense undergrowth that can be a real pain there in the summertime. This will be a good hike, so let's saddle up and hit the trail! -Fulcrum BTW:The three Campsites on the backpacking trail (Near points C,D,H) have water which can be real handy.
